Dog Friendly Holiday Cottages In Devon
Ningaloo Reef Holiday Homes has the largest selection of private holiday homes to rent in Exmouth that welcome pets while you’re on holiday. All our holiday homes are detached houses located around the town and Exmouth Marina development on the Ningaloo coast. Every home has different needs, so it’s best to clarify your dog’s age and size, sleep needs, and we can advise which home is best for your needs. We are pet owners ourselves, so we know what you need in your life. Located just in the middle of the tropics, Exmouth is a popular holiday destination in Western Australia, especially during the winter months when its warm temperatures and clear blue skies make for a great holiday. After the swim, not to mention the thrill of swimming with whale sharks.

Many of the Exmouth and Ningaloo Reef areas are off the map for dogs, from swimming with whale sharks to snorkelling and hiking in the Cape Range National Park to spotting turtle nests on the beaches. So, what can you do with your dog? Here are my top tips for dog walking in the Exmouth area…
Exmouth Holiday Cottages
My favorite dog friendly beach is Bundegi Beach near Exmouth. The beach itself is a 10-minute drive north of Exmouth, on the tip of the cape. This beach is close to the bay, but still has fine sand and offers clear water for swimming. Dogs are allowed on the beach without a leash.
For the more adventurous, there is a recommended snorkeling spot a few kilometers south accessible by kayak. Check the signs near the boat ramp. Alternatively, look out for fish hanging out along the boardwalk while snorkeling, but don’t expect to see coral here.
Previously, there was a dog-friendly beachside cafe, Beach Shack. But sadly at the end of 2023 they closed and moved to the city center – see below for more information on their new location, The Shack Exmouth.
For great views up and down the coast, head to Wilming Head Lighthouse, a 15-minute drive northwest of Exmouth. It’s an easy but paved path to the lighthouse, which is now gone, replaced by the North Telecommunication Tower lighthouse. There are no restrictions on dogs, but they must be kept on a leash.
The Beach House
The lighthouse and adjacent parking lot is a popular sun spot. Just be aware, after a period of rain, before the sun goes down, there can be a lot of flies. The watch is also a great place to watch the whales on the beach that visit the Ningaloo Reef every winter.
Exmouth has not one but two wineries. We went to Whalebone Brewing Company in an industrial area south of town. Dog-friendly (although from 2023 to 17:00), it has a large outdoor patio with tables. It’s also very kid-friendly, with play equipment and a sandbox.
At the time of our visit, there were seven locally brewed beers on tap, as well as three guest ones. Tasting paddles come in a variety of sizes, from five to nine tasting glasses. If you’re feeling peckish, choose from a variety of pizzas, and some are offered in kid sizes. Double check different opening times between seasons.
Another brewery in town is Fruit Craft Brewery. Located near a large shopping center, this winery is combined with a full-service restaurant, offering a wide selection. There are still plenty of outdoor tables where well-behaved dogs are welcome. Like Wellbon, there is also live music on select nights.
Excellent Exmouth Accommodation For Every Budget • The Sweet Wanderlust
While the best snorkeling spots near Exmouth are in the Cape Range National Park and are strictly dog-free, the same does not apply to Coral Bay. It’s worth a day visit (it’s only a 90-minute drive) or longer.
Coral Bay’s main beach does not allow dogs, with signs posted at each entrance. But dogs are allowed in the grassy park behind the beach and in the parking lot. If you’re not traveling alone, maybe snorkel and watch your baby?
Additionally, the beaches south of Tipp are dog-friendly. The main dog-friendly beach is Paradise Beach, between the Point and the Boardwalk, but it’s only accessible via an unmarked 4WD track.
Another popular method is to go to the viewpoint and jump down from the first sand there. There are signs prohibiting walking on the dunes to avoid erosion, but this is the easiest option to reach Paradise Beach without a 4WD.

Two other options are a small beach near the boardwalk, as well as Five Finger Reef. The Five Finger Reef stop is before the cruise line, but it is 4WD single track. I wish I had seen it because I heard great things about the snorkeling!
Exmouth exists largely because of its military role. A military base was first established in the South at Learmont during World War II as part of Operation Potshot. Later in the 1960s, the establishment of the Harold E. Holt Communications Station led to the establishment of the town.
It’s interesting to stop at the Potshot and Crate Monuments near Learmont Airport, to learn more about its fascinating history. In particular, the soldiers’ complaints about the unstable environment are very different from the area’s popularity with tourists these days, although the summer heat is difficult without air.
Although a coastal region, the Exmouth and Ningaloo region is part of Outback Australia, surrounded by stations. Many of these stations offer overnight or longer stays, and many dog-friendly campsites.
Watergate Bay Dog Friendly Cottages
The closest option to Exmouth is Ballara Station, an hour’s return journey, and accessible by 2WD. It’s open every year between April and October (double-check their website for exact dates), and pets are welcome at all campsites.
Other options near Coral Bay include Ningaloo Station, Wararoa Station and Genraloo Station. Check the details in advance, as some campsites are only accessible by 4WD and sometimes self-drive vehicles are required.
Whether you want to go on a snorkeling trip or head to the National Park for the day, there are plenty of dog-friendly options in Exmouth.
To get started, contact the visitor center, which can provide you with a list of local dog-friendly accommodations. There are also sometimes signs in caravan parks, or look out for Matts Cafe which usually has a menu on a notice board.
Pets Welcome Accommodation
Another option is the Exmouth Veterinary Clinic – we left our dog at their day care. The vet is only open weekdays from 9am to 4pm, and fees are high, but it’s a convenient option without the need to call.
Note that many beaches in the Exmouth area do not allow dogs for various reasons. Within Exmouth itself, the town beach near the yacht club prohibits dogs with very clear signs.
Dogs are also banned from most beaches on the western side of the Cape near Exmouth. For example, the famous Turquoise Bay, with great snorkeling, is located in the Cape Range National Park, where dogs are not allowed.
Further north outside the national park, most beaches still do not allow dogs, due to the turtle nesting that occurs during the summer months. Pay attention to the signs at the entrances, as well as the 1080 byte warning signs.

Instead, head to one of the dog-friendly beaches in the Exmouth area. There are two municipal council elections, as shown on this map.
Golf Club Beach is immediately north of Town Beach, starting from Warren Road, and is also popular for 4WDing on the beach. Alternatively, McLeod Beach is south of Exmouth Boat Harbor and is quieter.
There are also many other beaches around the resort
