Whether you want to hit the beach or the mountains, stay in the city or take a road trip, I have lots of ideas for dog-free day trips around Melbourne, all of which take place between 2am and 2am. An hour’s drive from the city center. What fun ideas will you tick off next with your pup?
Melbourne is world-renowned for its street art. Spending a few hours exploring here on foot is a great activity for your pup. Unlike an art gallery, there is no rule against pets walking down the aisles!

Melbourne’s most famous street art location is Hosier Lane near Federation Square in the city centre. I also highly recommend nearby ACDC Lane and Duckboard Place, which are generally less crowded. Take your dog for a walk and visit a dog-friendly cafe, whether it’s on one of the city’s trails or along the banks of the Yarra River.

If you don’t want to go all the way to the city centre, there are plenty of great examples in other inner city areas, perfect for brunch in a cafe or a drink at a local pub.
Youyance Provincial Park is one of the best places outside of Melbourne if you want to walk in nature rather than on rough roads. This local park is less than an hour from central Melbourne and dogs are welcome, but on a leash.
The Youyang people are named after the local aboriginal language meaning “high mountain in the middle of the plain”. The most popular walking route within the park is to Flinders Peak. Views of Melbourne and the Bellarine Peninsula can be enjoyed from the top of this granite block. The 3.5km return trip takes approximately an hour to complete and has many stairs along the way.
There are also a variety of short and long lengths, including some flat options. An easy option is to walk the 800m around Big Rock. Don’t miss the short path to the top of Granite Mountain, just a 100m walk from the car. There are also several picnic areas within the park.

Miss Drew’s Bakery and Dog Cafe on the Mornington Peninsula is a great weekend getaway from Melbourne that your dog will definitely love. The dog cafe is located behind the Tyabb Packing House, surrounded by antique shops, and is open on Saturdays and Sundays. (It’s best to check opening hours in advance.)
There are plenty of treats for your dog on the menu, from pukechinos to muffins and cookies. Maybe order one of their treats for your dog and enjoy it at one of the many tables. There’s also a shop selling treats and toys, and there’s also the option to order a doggy birthday cake.
While there are no artificial options on the menu, cross the road to the Ratdling Red Cafe opposite for a brew-your-own coffee.
St Kilda has long been a day trip destination from Melbourne and is a great place to visit with your dog. Although your dog is not allowed on Luna Park’s trails, you can walk along the pier (dogs allowed on a leash) and enjoy the local beaches.
The Puffing Billy Dog Express
St Kilda’s closest dog-friendly beach is on the west side of the pier, close to Quay Road, which leads to the tidal channel. Here, dogs can leave the beach every day of the year. In the East, dogs are seen on the beaches only in winter. Dogs are allowed on the beaches of West St Kilda all year round, with the exception of sensitive marina areas, including between Brooks Quay and the northern end of the St Kilda Pier car park.
If you’re visiting St Kilda on a Sunday, be sure to stop by the markets on the Esplanade. Also, be sure to visit Chez Misty on Gray Street. There are pancakes and a doggie menu just for dogs, as well as savory pancakes and sweet pancakes for humans. There is a dog seat in the back and a bathroom inside.
Not only is Chez Misty a dog-friendly pancake shop, it also offers paddle boarding and brunch events for the adorable pups. You’ll first enjoy a 1-hour paddle board lesson with your pup before returning to Chez Misty for breakfast together.
In the summer of 2022-23, the paddle and brunch will be held several days a month, with a mix of Saturdays and weekdays. Please stay tuned for the 2023-24 calendar. Group sizes are a minimum of four plus dogs and life jackets are provided and SUP lessons are offered for PUP by Karen of SUP. Of course, I’ll take lots of photos too!

A great dog-friendly destination in the heart of Melbourne is the Royal Victoria Botanic Gardens – Melbourne Gardens. Dogs on a leash are welcome to join us for walks in the gardens, around the decorative lake, through the fern ravine or past the “volcano”.
Another interesting aspect of visiting the Botanic Gardens is an interesting spot on the lake. Private guided tours of the Sterling usually last 30 minutes and take place between September and June. The gondola can accommodate up to six passengers, and well-behaved dogs can join you for free. There’s even an Instagram account dedicated to doggy pound tours!
It’s best to book in advance, at least during the holidays. The notes left the landing in front of the Terrace Café.

Off-leash dogs are allowed on the beach and in the fenced area next to the PA Burns Reserve off-leash park every day of the year. However, dogs must be allowed in the car park and on the road leading to the beach, and completely away from the reserve.
It’s best to go at low tide, when you can walk your dog the long way to the beach. Then, use the area under the roof next to the parking lot to set up multiple sprinkler heads at different heights based on each roof size.
Yarra Bend Park is only 4 kilometers northeast of Melbourne CBD, but it has the largest remaining area of natural woodland in the suburbs of Melbourne. The park is located on the banks of the Yarra River, which meanders 12 kilometers through the park.
There are a number of walks within the park, from the 850m-long Bushland Walk to the 9.5km-long Dights Falls Walk and Westfield Extension. For a list, download the Visitor Guide from the website. There are also several picnic areas.

Dogs are allowed in most areas of Yarra Bend Park, but there are some areas where dogs are not allowed. There are also several restricted areas – check the signs and make sure you wear a seat belt at all times. The best places for dogs to swim in the river are right under the deep rocks.
Do you like taking your puppy to the river? Head to the Fairfield Boathouse, where you can rent boats, canoes and kayaks, and bring your pup along. The tea room’s outdoor tables are also dog-friendly.
Daylesford is a popular weekend destination from Melbourne but is close enough for a day trip, taking around 80 minutes from central Melbourne to Daylesford.
It takes about an hour to circumnavigate the lake, which is very flat and less than 3 kilometers long. There are many car options along the route, at the Waterfront, Fulcher Street and Wombat Flat, or easily accessible from the city centre. Please note that dogs must be leashed.
