Dog Friendly Vacations Alberta – When we last left you, we were winding our way up the Bow Valley Parkway and driving 30 miles from Banff to Lake Louise…
We spent most of the summer in the mountains, but the Canadian Rockies completely surprised me. First of all, the view is fantastic. In the American Rockies, riding through the mountains means traveling from east to west and from west to east, over mountain passes from one valley to another. In Canada, the Bow River runs north to south roughly parallel to the Continental Divide, paving the way for a highway that runs for miles along the highest peaks. A sense of literalness
Dog Friendly Vacations Alberta
The way Canadians care for wildlife also made this experience unique. Everywhere there is a management attitude – rangers patrol the camps at night, removing anything that might attract bears… fenced off highways with nicely landscaped edges to allow the animals safe passage… even closing the Bow Valley Parkway at night from March to June so that the mothers that are raising young can find food without being hit by passing cars. Respect and conservation take precedence over fun and that’s something I wish we did more of in the US.
Travel Tips From Pet-friendly Hotels In Whitecourt Alberta
If the trip doesn’t impress you, just wait until you catch your first glimpse of the emerald green waters of Lake Louise! Fed by the Lefroy Glacier, finely ground stone flour is added to the water, giving it this spectacular color.
Although you can’t tell from the pictures, the waterfront was very crowded the day we visited. Crowds of people and many dogs admired the view, ate lunch at the restaurant, walked the lakeside trail, and rented canoes to paddle to get a closer look at the glacier. Since crowds and other dogs make Ty and Buster uncomfortable, we decided to hike uphill where we would likely find fewer people.
Having a nice cup of tea on top of a mountain is hard to resist, so when we saw a sign for a tea party at Lake Agnes, the decision was made.
The advertised distance is 2.1 miles, which translates to 1.1 miles, and seemed perfectly doable for an afternoon walk. Let me tell you… I did this math in my head dozens of times during the hike, convinced that my rusty math skills had failed me! It’s a long and steep climb, and we started a little late, so getting back to the car before dark wasn’t an option.
Discover Dog-friendly Beaches In Canada
When the group coming down the mountain told us we were halfway there, we almost gave up…but I’m so glad we didn’t. The view would be enough to pay for it, but the sandwiches and tea we got at the top were the icing on the cake.
Lake Agnes Tea House is located at 7,005 feet and was originally built by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1901 as a hiker’s refuge. Tea was served in 1905 and although the wooden building was replaced in 1981, it still has the original windows, tables and chairs. I learned at the top that we had gained 1,300 feet of elevation at 2.1 miles, which helped explain why my legs felt rubbery.
It turns out that running a tea house on top of a mountain is quite a challenge. Everything is made from scratch, so at the start of each season, a helicopter delivers 10,000 pounds of supplies, including all the flour, sugar, propane and other dry goods. Staff must bring in fresh supplies two to four times a week. And every day they carry garbage and recycling on their backs!
Of course, no adventure would be complete without getting a few pictures of the boys posing…so while Rod got our snacks, I posed for Buster and Ty.
A Romantic Bucket List Trip To Banff And Jasper, Alberta
Even Buster’s expression changed when Ty caught the first hint of a solution. The recording suddenly stopped as I tried to separate the two wild dervishes from the rigid body of the dead earthworm. Ty vigorously shook his new prize, Buster struggled to get the ‘toy’ from Ty, and I did my best to put the funeral back where it rested…without actually touching it. I’m sure we were quite an amusing sight.
At least I didn’t scream or fall into the water. When Rod came back, it was as if nothing had happened.
All Lake Louise hikes are dog-friendly, although your furry friend must be on a leash. And not all trails are as difficult as the ones that lead to the teahouse, so grab your pup and plan to spend a day exploring!
