One of the easiest places to get to (to see some of the buildings) is Ironton. Located between Silverton and Ouray, this ghost town is a fun visit for history buffs and nature lovers alike. Ironton is part of the Red Mountain Mining District, which includes several towns on either side of the Red Mountain Apparatus. It became an important transportation hub between Ouray and mining camps in the Red Mountain Region, but as time went on and mining slowed, the town was abandoned. Today, the city receives many visitors from curious tourists (and their four-legged friends).
Not up for a hike to explore the high country? That’s right – explore effortlessly with a jeep! This is one of the most popular outdoor activities in the area, and if you bring your own jeep, you can get up and go with your dog whenever you want. Many of the best trails in Ouray start right outside your front door.
No Jeep, no problem – there are plenty of Jeep rentals in the area, including Swiss America and Western Colorado. Your furry friend can come with you, just make sure you call and let them know when you book the Jeep, as you usually have to pay a small pet fee.
Bring your pet to cool off in the river at the Ridgway Off-Leash Dog Swimming Area in Ridgway. Perfect for hot summer days when it’s too hot to do anything else. You can find this outdoor space for you and your pup just north of the library on North Railroad Street. Please note that it is not fenced so dogs must be under voice control at all times. Bring a trash bag and some treats (for you and your pet) and enjoy a great day along the Uncompahgre River!

If you’re one of the more than 3 million people who adopted a quarantine puppy in 2020, you’ve probably wondered what it’s like to travel with a dog. At least I was. I’ve had a lot of questions about the logistics of traveling with a dog, and after having the opportunity to do some big trips with my pup last year, I’ve gathered some tips to share here. Here’s my guide to finding dog-friendly accommodation, and I’ll cover other aspects of traveling with dogs in future posts.
Although your accommodation options are more limited when traveling with a dog, you will still have the type of accommodation you want. Mostly this includes hotels and Airbnb/Vrbo.
Yes! A 2016 survey by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) found that 75% of hotels in the United States allow dogs. However, there are some caveats. Some hotels only allow small dogs under a certain weight, some only allow certain breeds, and almost all will charge an additional cleaning fee for bringing pets. Some hotels may also have policies against leaving your dog on the furniture or in the room unattended. Unless the hotel has specific weight, size and breed requirements listed on their website, it’s always a good idea to send a message before your trip confirming that your particular pet can stay there.

Contrary to popular belief, there isn’t much of a difference between luxury, luxury and budget hotels when it comes to pet-friendliness. This means that no matter what type of traveler you are, you will be able to find a hotel that allows you to bring your dog with you. An easy way to find pet friendly hotels is to go to a site like booking.com and use the “pet friendly” filter.
There are many hotel chains, from budget options like Motel 6 to luxury options like the Ritz Carlton, that allow dogs. Some chains allow dogs without restrictions, others allow dogs in certain properties, and others have weight, size and breed restrictions.
Some of my favorite pet-friendly hotel chains are Kimpton Hotels and Staypineapple Hotels. Not only do these chains allow all dogs — with no size or weight restrictions — but they also offer special amenities like water bowls, treat boxes, poop bags, and even dog beds for your dog to use during your stay. Here are other dog-friendly hotel chains and their requirements.
Unfortunately none. While more than 50% of US households have dogs, Airbnb reports that only 30% of Airbnbs are pet-friendly and only 5% of Vrbo properties are pet-friendly.

Hotels that allow dogs, such as Airbnbs and Vrbos, may have certain restrictions and other house rules regarding what your dog is and is not allowed to do while you are on the property. Because Airbnb and Vrbo properties are owned and operated by individual owners, you may see a wider range of rules and restrictions at these properties than at hotels. It is important to add a note to the host when booking about the specific type of dog you have so they can approve your dog before your trip.
You should always pack everything that will make your dog’s stay in a new place the most comfortable. If this is your first trip with your dog, it’s better to take more than less. Over time, you will learn which things are most important to your dog when traveling and which are not.
When our dog was young, we always took his crate with us on our trips because he felt most comfortable in his crate. As he gets older and more used to traveling, we can get away with taking his bed and blanket instead of a heavier, bulkier box.
It is also important to think about the type of trip you are taking with you. Want to get out and explore with your dog every day? Or will you mostly hang out inside? If you’re going to spend most of your time exploring with your dog, you probably don’t need to bring a ton of toys. If you plan to spend a lot of time at home, you may want to bring more toys to keep your dog occupied while you work or relax.

You will also want to bring enough food for your dog. While some hotels provide food for their furry guests, it may not be the same as what your dog is used to eating at home. A sudden change in diet can cause indigestion and other stomach issues for your dog, which is not fun for you or your dog to deal with when traveling.
Finally, you’ll want to check the hotel’s or Airbnb’s rules about what your dog is and isn’t allowed. If you are covering the furniture first, if the property only allows dogs on the furniture, you may want to bring a blanket or sheet to cover the furniture beforehand.
