But what is it like traveling in Queensland with a dog? How dog friendly is Queensland compared to other parts of Australia?
After traveling Queensland with our dog for more than two months, I am sharing our tips and experiences. Of course, some places and cities are more dog-friendly than others, but there are still plenty of dog-friendly places, things to do, and places to eat across the state.

Whether you’re a native Queenslander or visiting the state with your dog, these are just some of the dog-friendly holiday options.
A drive to the top of Cape York is a bucket list item for many Australians visiting Queensland. Luckily, you don’t have to leave your baby behind while doing this, the dogs can join you on the journey and stop for a final photo at the top of Cape York.
Of course, there are some restrictions on where dogs can and cannot go in Cape York, so plan your trip ahead of time and check the rules. There are plenty of other travelers with dogs who can share tips.
Unfortunately we haven’t made this list yet as we haven’t had a 4WD in Australia recently. If you only have a 2WD drive, I recommend driving up to the tropical area of ​​Cooktown, a dog-friendly town.

Although it doesn’t go all the way to Cape York or even halfway up the Queensland coast, you’ll still pass many beautiful beaches along the way, many of which are dog friendly, … off the leash. or even tied up. After driving the entire Queensland coast with my dog, I’ve put together a list of dog-friendly beaches in Queensland, stretching from tropical North Queensland to the Gold Coast. For each beach, I will provide detailed information about the dog-friendly rules (most dogs are allowed), but always double check the latest signs.
Be careful when visiting North Queensland beaches with your child. Both crocodiles and sea urchins are endangered north of Gladstone. Check the signs on the beach, and if in doubt, play on the sand from the water’s edge.
The best place to go dinosaur hunting in Australia is outback Queensland, especially the area between Winton, Richmond and Hughenden. While not all attractions and museums are dog friendly, there are still plenty of things to do with your dog.
The Dog-friendly Guide To Outback Queensland
A dog-friendly option is to visit the Flinders Discovery Center in Hughenden. This small town museum invites dogs to join the walls with pictures of their four-legged guests.
The main attraction of the museum is the ‘Huey’, a replica of the 7m long Muttaburrasaurus skeleton found locally. There is also a collection of fossils, including many dinosaur bones. The museum recently reopened after extensive renovations with new exhibits and a cafe.
In Richmond, you’re limited to taking selfies with your dog at the Kronosaurus statue outside Kronosaurus Corner, Australia’s largest fossil museum. However, ask about purchasing a permit to visit fossil hunting sites where dogs are allowed to accompany you. You can also go fossil hunting in Hughenden.
Vinton is the Tri-City star attraction. Not far from the city is the Age of Dinosaurs National History Museum, which has Australia’s largest collection of dinosaur fossils. Nursing centers are available on site, but opinions vary.

Instead, hire a dog handler for the day (ask at the information center or vet). Also use the dog seat for the Dinosaur Stamp National Monument tour at Upper Quarry Conservation Park, where dogs are not allowed.
Queensland is home to numerous islands, from small to large. Although dogs are not allowed on most of the islands, some of which are national parks, there are many Queensland islands that you can visit with your dog.
Three of the most dog-friendly islands near Brisbane are Bribie Island, North Stradbroke Island and Choochiemudlo Islands. An easy drive is Bribie Island, home to one of the dog friendly beaches around Brisbane. If you have a 4WD, North Stradbroke Island is perfect for beach camping with your dog. The small island of Kuciemudlo makes an easy day trip from Brisbane.
The two tropical islands off the coast are Great Cape Island and Magnetic Island. My favorite is Keppel Island, perfect for a friendly day trip from Yeppoon to enjoy the sun, sand and water with your little one by your side. Magnetic Island is dog friendly, if you bring your car and maybe stay a few nights at a dog friendly Airbnb.

Although the Queensland coast is thousands of kilometers long, the Queensland territory is much wider. There are many villages and resorts that are perfect for dog friendly trips.
With names such as the Overlander Route and the Matilda Route, there are a series of Queensland Outback route tours organized by local tourism agencies. Tourist information centers have detailed brochures and maps with recommendations for sights and cities to visit on each route.
Remember that the summer months can be very hot, so you may want to come inland for the cooler months of the year – your dog will appreciate the warmer weather!

In many ways, Queensland is the food bowl of Australia, with many fruits, vegetables and vegetables grown in the state and making their way to supermarkets across the country. Located in Atherton Plains, not far from Cairns, this historic museum complex is Australia’s largest historic village. With a collection of over 60 buildings, each building is full of historic items, from lorries and buggies to sewing machines and bottles. You need at least a full day to explore everything, tickets are valid for up to three days.

Best of all, trained dogs can be with you, including inside buildings! It is fun to travel with your child, with many water vessels around. Dogs are also welcome to enjoy coffee and snacks on the verandahs of the tea houses, as well as regular walks that take place every Sunday.
It’s worth a trip to Far North Queensland to visit this amazing museum, with your dog.
If you prefer to enjoy a cruise where you can watch the scenery go by, perhaps with commentary from the captain, there are plenty of dog-friendly cruises in Queensland.
In Far North Queensland, at least one of the Daintree River cruise companies allows dogs to board without prior notice. Or, visit St George, Queensland and enjoy the sunset with Sandytown River Cruises.
Queensland’s Best Pet-friendly Holidays
Thanks to Noosa Ferries, we had a great morning on the Noosa River. However, this option is limited to dogs that are small enough to fit on your lap. In Brisbane, you can travel with any size dog on Brisbane River Ferries and CityCats, as long as you avoid peak hours and your dog is on a muzzle.
Although many of the best places to visit in Queensland don’t allow dogs, I think you’ll agree that there are still plenty of dog-friendly options!
