Vacations With Dogs In Texas – Fall is the best time of year to spend a friendly weekend outdoors in Texas. The weather is finally getting cooler, but not cold enough to need to pack away your winter gear. Daytime walks become not only bearable and enjoyable, not to mention safer for you and your dog. At night, the temperature drops enough to warm yourself by a fire under the stars, where you can make s’mores or just laugh with your pup under a blanket.
San Antonio is lucky to have many wonderful attractions within easy driving distance. Whether you’re looking for the full experience, a luxurious cabin or something in between, there’s something for everyone. If quarantine and summer are feeling too sweltering, it’s time to pack your bags, jump in the car, and head to one of these three friendly weekend getaways in Texas.

Crystal Beach Pet-friendly Activities
If you’ve spent any time scrolling through Instagram, you’ve probably seen these cabins in remote areas of the United States. There are 3 stations in Texas, all very close to San Antonio: one outside of Dallas (4.5 hours from SA), one outside of Houston (3 hours from SA), and one outside of Austin/San Antonio (Wimberley, Approximately 10 minutes to be precise).
Although located in a remote location, each cabin comes with a large comfortable bed, beautiful natural views, a fully equipped bathroom with shower and toilet, and a kitchenette with cooking utensils. Best of all, Getaway is super pet-friendly and charges a flat fee of just $40 to cover the cost of additional cleaning! They provide food and water bowls, plenty of doggie biscuits, and a long playpen where you can tether your dog while still giving him room to roam.
According to the founders, Getaway was created to “escape from time, space and permission. Our cabins are located in nature, providing a retreat from the city, technology and work where you can recharge and connect with what matters most Reconnect with people and things.
If you want to “get away” from it all without having to do too much work, this is the perfect private weekend for you and your dog!

If you’re looking for something more nature-related, 13 Acres Yield might be the perfect choice for you! I first discovered this hidden gem last winter while looking for a private weekend getaway for my husband and our second wedding anniversary. These adorable cabins are located on 13 secluded acres just an hour and a half drive from St. Anthony outside of Dripping Springs.
Each cabin features air conditioning/heating, a small coffee maker, comfortable beds with clean linens, and beautiful Texas mountain views. There are two urinals on site, but don’t let that put you off! They are beautifully decorated and clean with no damage! Other amenities include cold water for filling reusable bottles, soap sinks for dishwashing and hand washing, and hot showers. There is an outdoor shower though, which is nice but can be a bit chilly if you’re visiting during the colder months.
There’s no shortage of things to do at 13 Acres Retreat. You can take a stroll around the property (note: there are no trails here, so this is an adventure!) or hop in the car and visit some of the nearby state parks, such as Pedernales Falls. If hiking isn’t your thing (or your dog’s), there are some canine wineries/breweries you can visit within 20 to 30 minutes of the resort. My personal favorite is Hawk’s Shadow Winery.
If you’ve never visited the Lost Maple Tree in the fall, you’re in for a treat. Lost Maples State Natural Area, less than a 2-hour drive from San Antonio, is one of the few places in Texas where you can see stunning foliage views. You have to use it correctly because the leaves won’t start changing until temperatures drop (usually around mid-October or early November). Texas weather is always unpredictable, but you can report on the park’s fall leaf colors here.
Pet-friendly Resort In Georgia
When the leaves begin to change color, the lost maple tree transforms into a bustling beehive! It is highly recommended that you book in advance, sometimes up to a year in advance! Due to COVID-19, access is even more restricted and you must reserve tickets (camp tickets and day-use tickets) online or by calling Customer Service.
I promise you, it’s worth it! Not only is Lost Maple a beautiful part of nature year-round, there are over 10 miles of trails to explore, including a loop along the top of a 2,200-foot cliff. There are 30 campsites with water and electricity, and about 50 primitive campsites that can be hiked to, many within a short walk of the water pumps.
If you or your pup aren’t too keen on camp, you can definitely take a day trip to Missing Maple. It’s safe enough to go for a walk in the morning and drive home in the afternoon. However, it’s hard to spend a night or two under the stars, especially when it’s cold enough to curl up in a sleeping bag with your pup!
