But there are several important considerations to keep in mind when planning a holiday with your dog. Which hotels allow dogs? Are there dog friendly restaurants and bars nearby? Are there activities you and your dog can enjoy together?

After years of exploring New England with my dog, I’ve bookmarked my favorite dog vacation spots. With so many options for dog-friendly hotels, restaurants and things to do, these dog-friendly travel ideas are sure to get your pup in their arms. So grab your favorite travel potty and get ready to plan the perfect New England dog vacation!
New England Vacation Rentals In Cape Cod
Burlington, Vermont is one of New England’s most dog-friendly destinations. Amazing outdoor adventures and a hip downtown Burlington is a playground for dogs and their companions. You will find many fun things to do with your puppy. Cycle the Burlington Greenway along the shores of Lake Champlain, then stop to sample local beers at one of the city’s many dog-friendly breweries. Beer spots in Burlington that allow pups on the patio include Foam Brewers and Zero Gravity Craft Brewery, while places like Switchback Brewing Co. also allows dogs indoors. Church Street Marketplace, one of New England’s most popular pedestrian (puppy-friendly) malls, has plenty of dog-friendly dining and shopping options. For pet-friendly accommodations, Made Inn Vermont offers a cozy home for you and your dog, a charming bed and breakfast within walking distance of downtown.
As the dog days approach, there’s no better place to be with your dog than Cape Cod! With miles of pristine coastline, irresistible charm and countless outdoor activities, Cape Cod is the perfect summer destination for people and dogs alike. You will especially enjoy visiting the Cape Cod National Seashore. This sunny stretch of sandy beaches and paths allows dogs to be dragged even in high season. Then quench your thirst at Provincetown Brewing Company. They are very dog-friendly (socially conscious) and have a dog house in the outdoor dining area that says “Gizam racists”. There are many pet-friendly places to stay on the Cape. Pamper your pooch at the luxurious Chatham Bars Inn or try to “break it” with your pooch at Nickerson State Park Campground.

For a quiet beach vacation with your dog, check out Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Five miles south of Portland, it’s a great place to get away from it all without going off the beaten path. At the southern end of Fort Williams State Park, home to the iconic Portland Head Light, is a large meadow where dogs can run and play. Of course, you can’t visit Maine without trying a local lobster, and Maine’s Bite has an outdoor food truck in the park with pet-friendly picnic tables. Higgins Beach is a popular place for children to frolic in the sand and splash in the water. After a long day of fun in the sun, relax at Inn by the Sea, a luxury beach resort that offers overwhelming pampering for pets and their owners.
Best New Hampshire Dog-friendly Beaches And Parks
You and your dog will love exploring Nantucket together. This tiny island off the coast of Cape Cod has virtually no traffic lights and plenty of New England charm. Right off the ferry, you’ll notice other pet owners cruising by, and it’s clear that Nantucket is a welcoming place for canine visitors. Choose from a variety of dog-friendly things to do, from strolling the Sconset Bluff Walk to exploring historic lighthouses. The city has several dog-friendly outdoor spots, including Black-Eyed Susan’s breakfast hotspot and the eclectic American bistro Queequegin’s. For a nominal fee, linger a while by the cozy brass lantern at the bed and breakfast that welcomes four-legged friends to select rooms.
This very dog-friendly town in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom is a must-see. Stowe is known as the Ski Capital of the East, drawing visitors from the local area to the world-class resort every winter. But with so many outdoor activities in every season, the oven is a great place to relax with your dog.
For a bigger adventure, Smugglers Notch State Park offers miles of trails through a stunning section of the Green Mountains. For something a little more affordable (but fun), you and your dog might want to take a walk on the Stowe Recreation Trail. This 11-mile walking trail is lined with dog-friendly restaurants and brew pubs along the way. There are also dog-friendly places to stay in the area for every budget. Luxurious resorts such as Trapp Family Lodge, Topnotch Resort and The Lodge at Spruce Peak offer creature comforts. But if you’re looking for something more affordable, consider staying with your dog at the Field Guide Lodge or The Stowhof.

In the summer, you can take advantage of longer daylight hours and cooler temperatures than you’ll find in many other states at this time of year. Or an autumn trip to enjoy the wonderful fall foliage from one of the best places in the world for leaf viewing.
The Best Dog-friendly Beaches In New England
We spent 5 months in Ontario and New England during the 2022 travel season. We spent two weeks in VT in July, a long weekend camping on the Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia National Park in early August, three weeks near Lake Placid, NY in mid to late August of August, and a month and three weeks in Campton, NH in September. Ellsworth, ME in early October and three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (We spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of the trip.)
It wasn’t a bad time to be in New England during those months. Sure, it can get hot at night in the summer, but make sure your rental car has air conditioning and you’ll be fine. (To be fair, we’re saying this as people who live in Texas, so our tolerance for heat is higher than those who live up north year-round. I mean, we don’t do anything without air conditioning either, so in that sense, our tolerance might actually be lower, ha!)
But if you want to plan your trip for the beautiful fall foliage, we’d say aim to travel in the second week of October. While the areas known for greenery can be crowded (ie Kankamagus Highway and Stow, VT), the views are worth it!
