Best Dog Friendly Beaches Sunshine Coast – Karimundi Off Leash Dog Beach (Ballinger Beach Park) is a beautiful off-leash dog beach located on the Sunshine Coast. A popular spot with locals and tourists alike, Dickey Beach is only a 5-minute walk from the original beach house. Located at 2 Buderim Street, it is a popular place for dogs to run and play in the sand and water, and there are also some picnic areas and walking trails nearby.
This beautiful off-leash dog beach is the best on the Sunshine Coast as it has everything you need or want for a great day out with your best friend.

In the car park you will find a lovely vintage coffee van – Make Love Peace & Coffee. Friendly locals Trish and Joe will be happy to make you a delicious barista coffee between tossing a tennis ball on the beach. Since they’re located on an off-leash beach, it’s only fitting that they also sell organic dog treats for your best friend.
Beautiful Sunshine Coast Elopement
After your coffee and fun on the off-leash dog beach, walk a short 500 meters (north) along the coastal path and you will come across a lovely lake (Coondibah Creek) for both humans and dogs to swim.
If you’re feeling energetic and/or hungry, walk another 1 km north along the path under the shady canopy of Lake Karimundi for some more water views and lunch at the dog-friendly Coco’s Cafe. If you have children, they will also love the lake’s shallow, safe waters and playground.

From campsites to holiday apartments and beach houses, here are some of my favorite places to stay in South East QLD for Great Danes. Living in Brisbane during the Covid restrictions and border closures has been an opportunity for us to travel more locally. And local travel meant that our Great Dane was always included in our travel plans. about me
Find Dog-friendly Beaches In Australia
I am Sasha, Great Dane’s mother and owner of Arctic Mist. A few years ago, I wouldn’t go more than a few months without taking an international vacation. But times have changed and in recent years we have done many local walks with our Great Dane, particularly around South East QLD. Sadly, Pickle passed away last year. But we recently welcomed a Great Dane puppy, Pumpkin, into our family. She follows in Pickle’s footsteps and will join us on many adventures. Â
So I thought I’d share some of my favorite dog friendly places to stay in South East QLD, including links to things to do and accommodation.
But before we go any further, if you haven’t traveled with your dog before and aren’t sure where to start, check out my blog
There are many dog camps around Australia and Hip Camp is a great place to start. You can enter the number of pets in your search and the results will only show pet-friendly options.
Moving To The Sunshine Coast
One of my favorite dog friendly campsites is Gordon Country in the Gombura Valley. Located on the Cunningham Gap between Aratula and Warwick, just 2 hours from Brisbane. We have camped there countless times and we started there (before Pickle’s time) when it was just a cattle farm with no facilities. It has changed a lot over the years and now has facilities, glamping sites and cabins.
Although the property and camp area are dog friendly, they do not allow dogs in the cabins (only in the fenced yard and porch). Because of this, we never lived in cabins. If you go outside of school/holidays, you probably have the place to yourself along the river. However, you need a 4WD to get the best campsites. Access to Gordon Country is via a gravel road and there are places near the entrance and offices that can be reached without a 4WD.
Dogs can be on a leash which is great. But be careful because there are free-roaming cattle and donkeys on the property. We love going there to relax around the fire, but are there many 4WDs and hiking trails? If you don’t mind the cold, you can swim in the river, and if you go in winter, bring all your warm clothes, it gets very cold!
There are many different camping areas on North Stradbroke Island. The rules around dogs seem to change all the time, so it’s best to check the Stradbroke Island website for the latest information on dog-friendly campsites and beaches. Stradbroke Island is a 45-minute ferry ride from Cleveland. There is public transport on Stradbroke Island, but if you are bringing your dog I recommend taking the car to the ferry. Please note that dogs must be muzzled to get out of the car on the ferry. There are also dog friendly holiday homes on Stradbroke Island, see below for more information.
Pet Friendly Accommodation Sunshine Coast
If you are looking for a vacation home/apartment, Vacation With Dogs is a great website to find dog friendly accommodation. Each property lists pet-friendly features such as whether the property is fenced, whether dogs are allowed inside, and whether they have things like dog beds, bowls, and poop bags.
Be sure to read the terms and conditions, as some places only allow dogs outside or dogs up to a certain size.
. If the conditions are not clear, contact the accommodation provider before booking. Better to be early than to have problems halfway through the holiday!
Also check that the design of the home is suitable, i.e. whether your dog is comfortable with stairs or a lift, whether there is a fenced garden or a place where your dog can do his work. If you’re not sure, don’t be afraid to get in touch and ask.Â

We stayed in a great 2 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment (perfect Alexa beach) in Alexandra Headland just north of Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast. It is located on the second floor and has stairs for access to the apartment. However, it has a spacious terrace with a beautiful view, so it doesn’t feel like you’re in an apartment. Dogs are allowed inside, but not on the furniture or in the communal pool. Â
It is a short walk to the headland and Mooloolaba. Mooloolaba has many dog-friendly restaurants with seating along the esplanade, as well as a sunset market every 1
Mooloolaba Beach is not suitable for dogs. However, Alexandra Headland Beach is dog friendly and dog friendly beaches are a short drive away.
Noosa Avalon Cottages is situated on a 30 acre property, 5 minutes from the town of Pomona and approximately 30 minutes from Noosa. There are 5 detached houses on the property ranging from 1-bedroom to 3-bedroom cottages. All are dog friendly and allow dogs inside. We stayed in the Kangaroo Lodge, which has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom. The cabin is fantastic, it has a great living room with beautiful views and a huge spa. The beds are small (double), but I would still recommend it for a nice quiet weekend.
Dog Friendly Accommodation In The Noosa Area
Some cabins have secure decks for your dog. The kangaroo home has a fenced garden, but the fence is to keep the cows out, not the dogs. It was good for our Great Dane though. The property is great for walking, with native gardens and lots of wildlife and birds, as well as free range livestock, so you may need to keep your dogs on a lead.
Pomona is a small country town with several restaurants, cafes and an IGA supermarket. There are local dog friendly markets in Stan Topper Park on Saturday mornings. They have a lot of local crafts/handmade goods as well as food stalls.
Toowoomba is the largest city in inland QLD and is known as the Garden City. Many people visit the spring for the spectacular carnival of flowers. It is a very beautiful city with many parks and gardens to explore.
We have stayed in Toowoomba many times. However, my favorite place to stay is the Cozy Cat Cottage in Toowoomba. The 3 bedroom cottage is a super cute renovated Queenslander. It is one of three original workers’ cottages listed on the heritage trail. This characterful cottage has retained all the details and atmosphere of its traditional charm, but has been renovated to provide modern conveniences. On the first floor there are 2 queen-size bedrooms and a loft with 2 single beds suitable for children. It has 1 bathroom with a large bathtub, an electric fireplace in the living room and a dog
