The lake is big. You can divide the Flaming Gorge Reservoir into two parts based on the surrounding cities – the Manila side and the Dutch John side. The Manila side is flatter and looks more like a desert.
The Dutch John side is hilly with striking red rocks. From this side you will find one of the most famous lookouts, the Red Canyon Overlook. Don’t miss it, it’s amazing.
The lake has many places for swimming, kayaking, kayaking and canoeing. Mustang Ridge is the most popular water sports area. Mustang Ridge also has a campground, making it very easy for you and your dog to enjoy the lake. In Dutch John, you can rent kayaks, paddle boards and more from Dutch John Resort or Trout Creek Flies.
If you want to get out on the water, you can rent motorized boats at Lucerne Marina and Cedar Springs Marina, depending on which side of the lake you are on.

Green River is located on Lake John in Holland. The Green River is one of the best places to fly fish in the world… yes the world, that’s global. You can take your dog swimming in the river or on a boat trip.
If you’re not into fishing, you can take a boat trip or hike the 7-mile trail that follows the river. Whitewater rafting on the green river is very sweet and suitable for beginners and dogs. You can rent a ferry from the places above.
The hike is beautiful and very easy, but if you plan on going out and back, it is 14 miles. Many people like to walk a few miles out and then walk back.
All hiking trails in the area are dog-friendly, as long as your dog is on a leash.

And finally, if you’re looking for something longer, check out the Greendale Overlook / Sweat Ranch Loop. It’s 8.8 miles and not very shady. Be sure to bring plenty of water to keep you and your dog hydrated in the heat.
There are many great campsites in the Flaming Gorge area, depending on your scenery and activities. Be sure to make reservations in advance at Recreation.gov, campsites fill up quickly.

The most beautiful campground is Canyon Rim Campground, located near the Red Canyon overlook. It has giant pine trees and high alpine habitats. It is ten minutes away from places where you can access the lake. Firefighters Memorial Campground is another great option if you’re looking for something truly scenic and higher in the Alps.
If you plan to spend a lot of time boating (or want easy access to a fun bar, more on that below), Cedar Spring Campground is perfect. It is located within walking distance of the marina where you can rent boats and buy supplies.
If you want to stay close to the Manila side of the lake, Sheep Creek Campground is perfect. It is located in a beautiful valley with aspen trees and access to a lake. You are also adjacent to the Sheep Creek Geological Loop, an amazing scenic drive.
Red Canyon Lodge is a dog-friendly lodge in the area. Their cabins are dog-friendly and dogs are welcome on the restaurant’s patio.

Red Canyon Lodge has several sizes of beautiful log cabins, a private lake, and a couple of hiking trails that are easily accessible from the cabins. Book early, they usually book a year in advance. This cabin is about a 20 minute drive to Flaming Gorge Reservoir.
Flaming Gorge Resort has dog-friendly hotel rooms. Flaming Gorge Resort has a restaurant and sled rental, and the patio attached to the restaurant is dog-friendly.
Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is very rural, so there aren’t many options for restaurants and bars. If you plan to camp or stay with your dog for the weekend, you should pack food and a picnic for some meals.
I mentioned this briefly above, but if you’re looking for a more fun night out, Snag is a great marina bar that sits right on the water at Cedar Springs Marina. They have a full drink menu as well as a selection of food and snacks each week. They are open only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Your dog can accompany you to the dock as long as it is on a leash and well behaved.

Red Canyon Lodge also has a restaurant where dogs are welcome on the patio. They serve lunch and dinner from early spring to late fall. Their menu is a little more upscale and the views of the private lake from the dog-friendly deck are incredible. Your dog must always be kept on a leash.
Your dog can accompany you on the Flaming Gorge Resort patio as long as it is on a leash and does not disturb other guests. This place serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. They also have a soft drink shop, an ice cream bar and an espresso bar.
