It’s no secret that Colorado hikers love their dogs. Colorado has hundreds, if not thousands, of trails that are open to dogs, but there are so many to choose from that it can be difficult to narrow it down and pick one. This list includes 20 of the best dog-friendly hikes in Colorado that I’ve personally hiked with my dog, Beckett.
Since moving to Colorado in 2016, I’ve spent most weekends hiking in the mountains during the summer and fall, so I have extensive experience exploring Colorado’s hiking trails. This is by no means a comprehensive list of dog-friendly hikes in Colorado, but I’ve tried to include a good portion of some of the best trails in different parts of the state that vary in difficulty.
With so many hikers and dogs on Colorado’s roads, it’s important that everyone does their part to reduce their impact on the environment. Here are some great tips to remember when hiking with your dog in Colorado.

All dog-friendly hiking sites in Colorado on this list are on public lands. However, different jurisdictions have different laws regarding leaks. Some national forests and wilderness areas expressly require dogs to be leashed, while others require dogs to be “under control” (meaning or under strict noise control). Some places, such as Boulder Open Space and Mountain Park, have unique programs where dogs can be walked using sound and visual cues. To ensure the route is dog-friendly, please follow the leash laws at the pedestrian crossings.
If your dog has poor memory, he should always be kept on a leash. When you walk your dog on a leash, you should always keep it on or if you come across other dogs or children on a leash, let them wander off your leash. Remember, keeping your dog on a leash while hiking can help prevent negative encounters with wildlife and keep your dog safe.

When walking your dog in Colorado, always remember to pick up and dispose of your pet’s waste. Animal waste is considered a biohazard, so it is often required to be packaged by law.
Please do not leave nose bags on the curb. Even if you have your heart set on coming back, it’s technically brilliant and encourages others who don’t have the same intentions to do the same. Bring animal waste back to the trailhead and dispose of it properly!
