Best Dog Friendly Hotels In San Diego – In today’s post, I’m going to share with you the best dog-friendly boutique hotels for your child and all the dog-friendly activities you can do during your stay.
Kimpton is pet-friendly from the start. It was established in 1981 and pioneered the concept of boutique hotels. And the first to understand that dogs are family. Their founder, Bill Kimpton, brought his miniature sheepdog, Chianti, to work because he knew dogs were a mood lifter.

Kimpton is available in 60 cities. We never leave our four-legged family members at home and have stayed at their properties in San Francisco, Phoenix, Denver and Santa Barbara.
Pet Friendly Hotel San Diego
You know a hotel is pet friendly when it has a “Pet Relations Manager”. They are honorary employees of the Kennel Club. Their main job is to check the quality of all pet supplies. Their other duties include greeting guests in the lobby and attending evening wine hours.
Kimpton makes every property pet-friendly because they believe it’s better to travel with a friend. They don’t charge a pet fee or worry about size. You won’t see restrictions limiting dogs to 50 pounds or 75 pounds. In fact, as they say – if your dog can get through the door…they can stay. So… if you have a big 125 pound Great Dane… yes… they can.
At the Solamar Hotel in San Diego, Molly holds the coveted position of Director of Pet Relations. He can check the dog bed and is happy to welcome guests.
Molly’s was off on the day we stayed but Annie Boston gave us a lovely warm welcome. Annie and all Kimpton employees can bring pets to work. He supervised our check-in and made sure we received the welcome treatment.

We said goodbye to Annie and went to our room. I was working in the hospitality industry and I called it the “moment of truth”; The moment your impressions on the hotel website meet your expectations upon entering the room. We are happy to report that the guest room was everything we imagined and more. For the first few minutes, Maggie and Orbit explored every square inch of the room. They jumped excitedly on the bed, looked under it, on the sofa and finally in the bathroom.
All rooms at Hotel Solamar are spacious and measure 340 square meters. We stayed in a corner spa room with 1 king size bed. Our room was brightly lit and had a sitting area and a desk. The room felt larger than your standard hotel room and the bathroom was large by normal standards. I didn’t get to try the tub, but Maggie and Orbit posed for fun. After they settled in, we looked over and saw this lovely welcome greeting from the Kimpton team. We got the cutest dog beds, water bowls, treats, poo bags, a cute little Kimpton Bone plush toy and finally puppy treats in our room. Let’s just say the girls were blown away by the smell of the cake and weren’t too happy that I let them wait and take pictures next to the cake first.
Kimpton knew right away that travelers wanted to relax and unwind at the end of each day. Each evening Kimpton hosts a complimentary wine hour with light hors d’oeuvres. The best part… your dog can join you. It was a Friday night when we stayed and there was a large group downstairs. I would guess about 70 people and we saw 5 other dog families.
After wine hour, I took the girls for a break. There was a meadow next to the hotel. This is always a big concern for me when I travel alone, because as an unaccompanied woman the last thing I want is for dogs to have to walk far to do their business.

This dog trip was all about spending time with my dog. So I decided to order room service. The menu was down from the Jsix restaurant. I ordered the Jsix burger and chicharrones. The gentleman who answered the phone said he would be there in 25 minutes and I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived at 15.
After dinner I decided to take the girls for an evening walk. Solmar is conveniently located in the center of Gaslamp. Almost every store we went to was dog friendly. We went window shopping on Fifth Avenue at Urban Outfitters and tried on some Gorin Brothers hats. We ended the evening with a visit to the studio of our favorite artist, Tim Kantor.
The sheets are delicious and we slept long and well. After a good rest, we woke up shortly after sunrise to explore the area around the city center.
I find water soothing, so I gravitated to the bay just a few blocks away. We started our Bay Walk from the Convention Center and headed to Midway, making sure to enjoy the points in between.

On the way back, we stopped at the fish market… which was probably the highlight for Maggi and Orbit. The fishermen showed off their fresh catch from the day before and were kind enough to be close enough to see and smell the fish. After about two hours we returned to the hotel. In all we walked about 4 miles back. We made sure to stop by Petco Stadium to take pictures of the bridge. It was a quiet day as baseball had not officially started. But we are very proud of our ball park. We love that they are dog friendly.
When baseball season starts (March 29), you can reserve one of six dog-friendly booths to watch the game. Petco and the Padres call this area the Barkyard. And although they limit 6 dogs per game (call for reservations), Petco opens its doors once a year and makes the entire stadium dog-friendly. We had the pleasure of participating in it last year and you can read the article here.
After taking photos outside Petak, we returned to the hotel. I fed the girls and ordered room service. I have to say the french toast was the best I’ve ever had. Girls were watching me all the time.

San Diego traffic isn’t that bad. Most interesting places can be reached within 30 minutes. Here are some favorites:

If your four-legged friend needs to socialize with other dogs, there is a fenced dog park south of El Prado. Nate’s Point Dog Park spans 2.3 acres and includes drinking fountains and picnic benches. It’s a local favorite.

If you need more retail than you can find in the Gaslamp, a 15- to 20-minute drive off the highway can take you to Westfield UTC Mall. It recently underwent a $500 million renovation and is a great place to shop with your little ones. And the bonus is that Instagram has plenty of room for photos. If you’re looking for more eclectic shopping, check out the North Park area. And don’t forget to stop by the pigment

San Diego is famous for its off-leash dog beaches. Our favorites are Del Mar Dog Beach, Fiesta Island and Coronado Dog Beach. You can see photos, titles and reviews at this link.
With an average temperature of about 70 degrees, there are water activities almost year-round. For water sports enthusiasts, a fun activity to take your dog is stand up paddling. We recommend that you call ahead of your trip to make a reservation.
