Best Dog Friendly Hikes Washington – Walking dogs (and cats, as well as rabbits or other animals) has become popular in Washington state. It is also an attraction for those from outside, whether they are emigrants or just visiting.
Many of the Washington State Parks are family friendly, so you don’t have to look for a great destination.

Although I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting all of the national parks, here are some of my favorites so far.
Dog-friendly Hikes Along The Hood Canal
This 503-acre park has a lot to offer for walking and exploring, and plenty of fields to run and play! A quiet morning, perfect for kitties too!
Located in Puget Sound, this 431-acre park has a campground for overnight activities and beach access. When the tide is out, there are plenty of sandy beaches to explore, as well as a variety of hiking trails.
Nolte State Park is a small, but no less fun, 107-acre park with small trails and a nice pool for your little one to play in on a hot summer day.
Although I didn’t have the pleasure of taking any photos at the state park (yet!), it’s a great fun day! Spread over 3,854 hectares, there is something for everyone. Coves and cliffs, beaches and trails, camping and much more. Even water pools (remember to keep the dogs to protect them)!

There are four national parks in Washington State, and the general rule is that dogs can go where cars can go. So there is no way and not in the buildings. But there are other places on and off where your dog can enjoy our national parks too.
One of my favorite places to visit and take family vacations, Olympic National Park has SO MUCH to offer and even a few places for our furry friends to explore too!
As with all national parks, they are not allowed in public buildings, on interpretive tours or in the wilderness.
Although animals are allowed in the park, their activities are limited to the Pacific Crest Trail. They are also allowed on leashes in the Ross Lake and Lake Chelan National Recreation Areas, although with a little more supervision.

Like North Cascades National Park, dogs are only allowed on the Pacific Crest Trail portion of the park. If you are camping in the park, you are welcome to bring your dogs, but they must stay inside the campground on a 6-foot non-retractable leash.
Best suited for dogs, this national park has a collection of historic sites and state parks in Washington and Oregon, and dogs are allowed not only on all trails, but also in the forum area! However, it is prohibited inside all public buildings, including photo replica rooms and the visitor center (carpeted areas except the dining foyer).
In general, dogs and other animals are allowed in the United States. Forest Service trails have limited access. The very popular but less strenuous Enchantments trail and the Ingalls Lake Trail are two such places. Many alternatives are good, but as always, your pets must be safely confined.
With 1,100 miles of trails, the state DNR is a great choice for your dog or other animals to explore and enjoy. Be sure to check any posted signs to see if pets are not allowed.

We are blessed with many diverse and well-run parks here in Washington State. And dogs on the lap are welcome to all! Some of my personal favorites include Rattlesnake Lake in North Bend, Point Defiance Park in Tacoma, Marymoore Park in Redmond (which also has a great dog park).
A few things to consider when deciding which trail or location is suitable for dogs and suitable for you and your dog (or other animal):
This can be stressful for your dog (and certainly for other critters you might consider bringing), and so maybe an early morning walk would be better for that area, or just look at other options.
There is a lot of high altitude, which can be hard on your joints? Are there rivers/rivers to cross and is your pet afraid of water? What about rocks or other obstacles? Things that may be easy enough for us humans can be a problem for some dogs when it comes to walking.

For small children and old dogs, long walks can be more tiring, but also harmful to the joints and ligaments. Cats and other small animals cannot tolerate older dogs. Consider using a bag if you really want to bring pets/kids, or the other way around.

This trail is on “Dog Mountain”, so your child is invited! Located in the Columbia River Gorge, the Dog Mountain Trail treats hikers and their four-legged friends to stunning wildflowers in the spring and breathtaking views of the valley year-round. Be sure to warm up before going out; the first half mile is uphill before reaching a split in the trail. The loop may be challenging to some, but we guarantee the views of the Columbia River and surrounding mountains are worth it! On one of the paths (if you take the eastern leg), there is also a place called “Puppy Dog” Meadow. If that’s not reason enough to take this trip, I’m not sure what is!
Featured in “The Dog Lover’s Companion to Oregon” by Val Mallinson, this trip is perfect for you and your dog. Many people travel this route in the fall or spring with the hope of seeing gray whales migrating along the coast! Whales or not, this beautiful road starts in the west and takes you through some big old forests. After a half mile or so, you will be rewarded with a view of the beach. This 4.8-mile round trip trail is flat, making it accessible to hikers of all skill levels and your canine companion.
Located in the Mount Hood National Forest, this trail shares its name with the Washington hike, but offers a different experience. The 6.9 mile trail features beautiful wildflowers and offers breathtaking views of Mount Hood. Keep your pup on a leash and enjoy the variety of flora and fauna along the way.
Save this for next summer! The trail is currently closed in summer 2023 for construction, but it will reopen, and when it does, you should be the first one there! Located near Snoqualmie Pass, the Franklin Falls Trail is a family-friendly hike that’s also perfect for dogs. A round trip of two kilometers leads to a beautiful waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation. Let your furry friend cool off in the stream while enjoying the beauty of running water. The rewards are truly amazing for the little effort this requires!Â
