We’re in Banff, Alta., on the last leg of a nine-day, five-state road trip out west as we moved to Vancouver from Toronto, partly for my husband’s job and partly to live in nature. More than anything new. I hope Charlie admires the Canadian Rockies and glacial lakes because I stayed with him after driving over 4,700 kilometers to our new home.
How To Protect Your Pet During The Winter In Canada
Flying is scary for people with a basic knowledge of aeronautics. Charlie is a very sweet 10 year old terrier with separation anxiety. And at 20 kilograms (about 45 pounds), it’s too big for a salon. They must travel in airline-approved packaging, such as checked baggage, in a sealed but not necessarily temperature-controlled environment. (Service dogs are allowed in the room, but Charlie will not help them.)
The flight to Vancouver from Toronto takes about five hours, not counting the indefinite layover time on the runway, and I signed the contract on July 1 – hot tarmac season. Air Canada implements temperature restrictions for pets on domestic flights when temperatures exceed 29.5 degrees. Not WestJet, the company’s website says: “We love Canada, but unfortunately the heat is not a problem.” We moved right after a heat wave in British Columbia, the deadliest weather event in Canadian history, during which temperatures in the province reached 49.6°C.
The websites of WestJet and Air Canada state that the airlines “accept no responsibility for the care or feeding” of pets on board. I wondered who was responsible. To us, Charlie is an unpleasant but stubborn, restless fur who loves black forest ham more than I’ve ever loved anything and is prone to walking off a leash in a desperate attempt to smell every tree he passes. In the airline it is cargo.
Fortunately, airlines do not accept pets as baggage, but just one example is enough to shock pet owners.

In 2013, Larry the greyhound died on an Air Canada flight. In 2017, WestJet put Cooper the labradoodle on the wrong plane. And earlier this year, Air Canada lost Dewey the cat during a layoff at Toronto’s Pearson Airport; He was missing for more than three weeks before being found in critical condition. Dewey’s owner originally booked a direct flight, but the airline changed.

These are the only problems flying animals regularly encounter. But we moved during a crisis, and COVID-19 was not our friend in heaven. Travel restrictions, job shortages and fewer flights lead to overbooking, last-minute flight cancellations, flight time changes and even airline changes without warning. What if we fly and Charlie doesn’t? What if our planes switched to non-temperature controlled planes?
In July, my husband and I flew to Vancouver to settle down, leaving Charlie with my parents and their big yard. We flew back in October to go home, leaving plenty of time to plan our big trip to Canada.

“I’m like my dog’s executive assistant,” laughs my husband, detailing how to make vet appointments, rent a car and confirm dog-friendly hotels.
If you don’t have a car, it’s much cheaper to fly, so we decided to take a convenient road trip—the best way to stay within the Covid-19 restrictions—since we haven’t seen much of Canada.
Before the pandemic, I traveled a lot, mostly around the world. I thought Canada would always be there, wide and solid, waiting for a retirement trip after seeing the world. I was in no rush to explore this huge country, maybe I took it for granted.
So, if it wasn’t for Charlie, we might never have seen the Terry Fox Memorial in Thunder Bay, deserted in the new times, if not for the dogs that were walking. I may have missed the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg and the famous Lake Louise with its tour buses. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have seen the famous Gopher Hole museum in Torrington, Alta., with taxidermy dioramas of Gophers that helped a local farmer solve a rodent problem and turned a small town into an international hub.
