In the summer, take advantage of the longer daylight hours and cooler temperatures than many other states at this time of year. Or take a trip in the fall and enjoy the stunning fall foliage at one of the best places in the world to view leaves.
We spent 5 months in Ontario and New England during the 2022 travel season. We spent two weeks in VT in July, a long weekend camping on the Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia National Park in early August, and three weeks near Lake Placid, NY. In late August, we spent a month in Campton, NH in September and were in Ellsworth for three weeks. , ME in early October and three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (We also spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip.)
There was no bad weather in New England during these months. Sure, it can be hot at night during the summer months, but just make sure the rental has air conditioning and you’ll be fine. (Actually, we say this as Texas residents, otherwise our heat tolerance is higher than those of us who live up north year-round. That being said, we wouldn’t be without air conditioning either, so in that sense, our tolerance is probably lower, ha!)
However, we will tell you that if you want to plan your trip for the beautiful fall foliage, then you should travel in the second week of October. Although places known for foliage will be busy (eg Kancamagus Highway and Stow, VT), the view is worth it.

Lincoln is definitely a fan of the roads we can take because it means it’s infinitely easier to get going. If you are close enough to any point on this road trip to drive, we recommend it. Take this route to the nearest point and make a full U-turn to return home.
However, if you can’t drive here and have a dog that does well on airplanes, you can fly into Boston International Airport and rent a car upon landing. If you are flying in, we recommend modifying this route slightly and starting from: Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, NH > Acadia National Park > Portland > Boston.
Note: If you live too far to get anywhere on this trip and your child won’t be getting on the plane (not Lincoln if he’s flying alone in the seat next to us, yay!), then let him. Let us know where you live in the comments below and we’ll have Lincoln make another post closer to his original location.
