We always refrain from walking through the Zion National Park area on our way to Utah because Zion, like most national parks, is not “dog friendly.” On our last trip we decided to give it a try and stay at the friendly Zion White Bison. Located about a mile from the park’s west entrance, we used it as our base camp for driving through the park and checking out all the dog-friendly spots on both sides of the the entrance. All I can say is – I’m glad we decided to go ahead, even though there aren’t many activities inside the park – there’s plenty outdoors.
Pet Friendly Lodging Zion National Park
We stayed at the animal friendly Cliff House in Zion White Bison and loved it. Like the ancient Anasazi kivas, our family’s Dog Cliff has a beautiful and colorful interior, with a king-size bed, a living room with a sofa and TV, a full kitchen, a bathroom, and floor deck. Dining table and fire pit, grill and our own tank overlooking the beautiful mesas and valleys around us!
Zion National Park In The Winter
Zion White Bison is rated one of America’s top campsites for animal-friendly covered wagons, tipis, and cliffs, and I can’t wait to plan a return trip! Although there are no good trails for animals in Zion National Park, the drive through the park alone is beautiful and there are many fun things to do for the dog on both sides of the park.
Snow Canyon State Park – (note that most trails require a park entrance fee) We love how the red rocks are all over this park and have a great time checking it out trails, caves, sand dunes, petroglyphs, and mini slot canyons.
Pink Coral Sand Dunes State Park – (entrance fee) The dunes are estimated to be 10,000 to 15,000 years old and you can rent an ATV or sandboard to ride the dunes, but we prefer to walk around and play. In the sand!
Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs/Kanab Wilderness Area – This 112,500-acre wilderness area features hiking, canyons, rock formations and painted mountains, and options for dog-friendly adventures are the end! It was a bit wet when we visited, the road was a bit washed out and the ditch was flooded so we had to change at the last minute – but there’s no shortage of things to do here!

After a day spent exploring, we returned to our clifftop hotel and watched the sunrise from our hot tub. Zion White Bison property is full of character, and you can visit his own white bison (a calf was born two days after our visit). Dog-friendly Zion National Park: Visiting With A Dog
Keep dogs on a leash when out in Zion NP and in the water. Dogs are at risk of cyanotoxin exposure because it is difficult to control how they interact with toxic algal mats. Check out our website for current information on cyanobacteria blooms.
Pet owners are responsible for removing pet waste from all areas of the park, including campsites, dining areas, parking lots, trails, pet friendly trails, etc. construction site.
The only trail that allows animals is the Brows Trail, which starts at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center.
Pets are not allowed – on other roads, in the forest, on buses or in the public buildings of Zion.
