Field Trips With Dogs Kauai – Funds from The Dog Field Trips Grant 2019 were used to purchase new leads, collapsible dog water bowls, and Kaua’i Humane Society metal water bottles for our shelter dog field trip program.

Not considering the supply needs for the Shelter Dogs on Field Trips program is a challenge. in 2019 The Dog Excursions Grant helps ensure we have the necessary supplies to run the excursion program effectively, making the program more enjoyable for our two-legged and four-legged friends. We place many adoptable dogs in the program because it is important for both mental and physical enrichment. This funding allows us to purchase the necessary supplies and ensure that the events we coordinate are safe and that the needs of dogs are met in the event of their loss.

This grant helps 7-18 dogs six days a week. It is difficult to determine the exact number of dogs, because some are walked every day, others less often. We estimate that nearly 50 different dogs have gone into the field since receiving the new item.

Kaua’i Humane Society

In 2019 the Dog Field Trips Grant helped many dogs get adopted or rehomed through the Shelter Dog Field Trips program! Muriel (first photo), a beautiful hound, is one of the dogs adopted as part of the walking program. Her foster parents took her on a tour, “loved her sweet brown eyes and warm puppy kisses” and decided she should fly to Washington to see her family. They are now happy, loving and adjusting well to life in the Pacific Northwest!

Wylie (second photo), a sweet senior mix, is one of the dogs who received full sponsorship support for the transfer through A.L.O.H.A. The move program is due to one of her tour mates falling in love with her and wanting her to move to a place where she would have a better chance of being adopted. Since there are few homes on Kaua’i, she received funding for rehoming, which gave her the opportunity to join one of her rescue partners in Oakland, where she is currently living in foster care while she waits for a home.

Field Trip: As my wife and I were planning how to spend our last day on Kauai, a travel brochure for a shelter dog trip sponsored by the Kauai Humane Society. For a small fee, people can take their adopted dog for a day (or longer) for a walk, fun at the beach, or even shave ice! After two weeks abroad in South Korea, we miss and miss our precious Yorkie mix, Yogi. We needed some animal therapy and a dog date seemed like the perfect way to enjoy our last day on the Garden Isle.

The Kauai Humane Society is located just 10 minutes west of Lihue. The shelter is well cared for by knowledgeable staff who take pride in their daily work. Unlike animal shelters in Southern California, which are home to many chihuahuas and pit bulls, Kauai’s population is mostly hunting dogs. I noticed the general style of Airedales, Whippets and Hound mixes. It turns out that this particular breed was once bred and trained to catch the feral pigs that once proliferated on Kauai. When dogs are too old to follow, they become homeless. That’s one of the reasons Kauai shelters struggle to care for homeless dogs. The shelter was founded in 1952 and takes in around 3,000 animals every year!

Dog Outing Programs

Cover opens one hour earlier than above. However, dogs cannot be controlled at that time. As recommended by many residents, we still plan to arrive an hour early to have a better chance of taking the dog we meet as well.

You will notice different colored signs in the kennel area to tell you which dogs are available for dog meetings. These are dogs that are at least 6 months old, have all current vaccinations and are spayed or neutered.

When I entered the shelter, I had to mentally prepare myself for grief and helplessness. I felt so much attention from each dog that I tried to spend at least a minute or two with each one. But as soon as I saw Muriel in the corner, I instantly fell in love. Muriel is a shy 10-month-old hound with a beautiful caramel coat and an infectious smile. We checked her tag to make sure she was on a dog date and quickly alerted the staff.

Kauai Humane Society

First, you must be at least 18 years old to participate in the Kauai Humane Society Field Trips for Shelter Dogs program. If the dog is lost, you will be asked to sign a liability waiver and provide credit card information for a $200 security deposit. The shelter also asks for a minimum donation of $40, which is non-refundable.

After signing the disclaimer form, the staff will give you a brief individual report with important points to consider:

Your dog will wear a bright orange vest that says “Adopt Me” to let potential adopters know they are looking for a loving home. The staff will also prepare a backpack with all the necessary dog supplies for your adventure:

Prohibited areas include Koke’e State Park, Waimea Canyon, Salt Pond Park, and county-managed parks or beaches. Use your own discretion when deciding where to travel. If there has been recent rain in the area, do not walk on muddy paths, which can cause slippery conditions for you and your dog.

Kauai Humane Society Shelter Dogs On A Field Trip

When we left the Kauai Humane Society, Muriel seemed a little shy at first. He probably smelled our own dog on our clothes. But as soon as we jumped into the jeep, it warmed up immediately. He seemed to know we were in for a great adventure!

Although we had hoped to visit the Sleeping Giant Trail on our last hike, it had rained the night before and we didn’t want Muriel walking through wet puddles. Instead, we decided to let him walk along Po’ipu Beach and the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail, just 20 minutes south of the retreat.

During a cheerful walk along the beach, we met people pointing to the sea and taking pictures. They then saw a Honu (Hawaiian green sea turtle) swimming in the bay eating lima (seaweed). Some of them are several feet long! We wandered the beach all morning playing fetch with her favorite stuffed animals.

Unfortunately, Muriel and I only had a few hours as we had to fly out in the evening. I started missing him right away.
