Dog Friendly Vacations Ny – Long Island, New York is known for its beautiful beaches and excellent schools. One little known fact is that it is very dog friendly. That’s not to say there aren’t great places to enjoy your dog across Long Island. But Montauk, on the east side of Long Island, New York, has a great escape for dogs. This is one of the few places on Long Island where you can find cute and fun places to hang out with your dog.
Montauk is on the east side of Long Island. It means the end. Because Montauk marks the end of Long Island, you can find t-shirts, bumper stickers, and other items emblazoned with the words “MONTAUK. THE END.” Leave Montauk Point and discover the open Atlantic Ocean just a few miles from land.

The 200-year-old historic lighthouse is one of Montauk Point’s main attractions. For a fee, visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse and overlook the Atlantic Ocean and all of Montauk. Summer fun on Long Island is all about the beaches! Sunbathing, surfing, jet skating, boating, and hiking through the dunes and beaches are favorite pastimes of Long Islanders. Having grown up on Long Island, I can attest that Long Islanders love their beaches and waterways! Unfortunately, there are very few beaches around the “island” that allow dogs. However, Montauk has more than one great beach that is open to dogs at any time of the day, all year long!
Camp Hero was a military base until the 1980s when it was turned over to the New York Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. It was even used as a ball range during the Revolutionary War! No shells were found except one in a nearby swimming pool. lol! Camp Hero is located along the beautiful Montauk coastline and is dog friendly! We enjoyed the beauty of the coast and the cliffs surfing the ocean.
In the photo below you can see the historic Montauk Lighthouse in the distance. It was a steep and narrow walk to get from the cliffs to the beach, but it was worth it!

Montauk Point State Park is located on the eastern end of Montauk, just below Camp Hero State Park. The lighthouse at Montauk Point is one of the main tourist attractions. During the American Revolution, many naval disasters occurred at Montauk Point. After the Revolution, the newly established United States government wanted to encourage trade with other countries. In 1796, the Montauk Lighthouse, the first lighthouse built in New York State, was created to meet this need. Gosman’s Wharf is a waterfront neighborhood in Montauk that started out as a small restaurant in the 1940s. The area is popular as a small entertainment district with several shops, ice cream parlors, oyster bars and several waterfront restaurants, including the mainstay Gosman’s. Duck restaurant. Most dog-friendly restaurants don’t have outdoor patios, but this outdoor “Oyster Bar Patio” does allow dogs.
After a very enjoyable and tiring day in Montauk, we return home. Of course, we’re hungry after all the fun in the sun, so we’ll stop at one of the dog-friendly restaurants along the way! Be careful!
