Do you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and breathe the fresh air of the country living 30 minutes from London (and without moving your car, if you have one)? Well, a dog day in the Chilterns is the perfect solution. In this article we present our latest dog walk from London to Beaconsfield. Take a trip to visit what is said to be the oldest dog in England (apparently a dog).
Last month some friends decided to take me and my husband on a surprise date. Just a note, dogs must be allowed, so they plan a full dog experience (provided it’s not a dog, we were very impressed!) They chose the Chilterns as their destination, just a few miles west of London. It was a very rare event where I didn’t have to be responsible for organizing and controlling the dogs, but I could sit back and relax.

Getting to the Chilterns is easier and quicker than you think. You’ll be surprised, like us, that it’s only a 30-minute journey from Marylebone Railway (the oldest and most beautiful railway in central London) to Beaconsfield, where you can start exploring the Chilterns. We had a train from Marylebone at 11.14: a train with only a few cars that got us to our destination on time.
From Beaconsfield station we went to the Royal Standard Pub (where our friends had booked a table beforehand). From the station, cross the railway bridge (right) and turn left: a little secluded is a pedestrian walkway that connects the villas and trees. It’s an easy 30 minute walk along the highway and a short walk to the gym.
The Royal Standard is a historic alehouse that is said to be the oldest free alehouse in England and a “hidden gem off the beaten track”.
You may feel it’s an old pub from the outside – a racing car ‘parking lot’ can give it away – but it’s when you walk through its doors that you realize the history is steeped in its charms. If you are curious about it, you can find the full story here, otherwise you can save the visit as it is printed on the back of the menu.
Visiting Trust Places With Your Dog
The main room could be mistaken for a game of thrones series with all the old furniture, animal heads, picture windows and many other things you can find in each room. In fact, this salon is not familiar with cinema: for example, scenes from The Theory of Everything (starring the absolutely amazing Eddie Redmayne) were filmed here, as well as scenes from many other movies and TV series.
As it was highly recommended, our friends booked a table in advance. We arrived earlier than the agreed time but although the bar didn’t look good we had to wait until the appointed time to get a table inside so we drank in the garden while we waited. We ordered a dog bowl too
