Travelers driving along the highways of the South and Midwest in the mid-20th century were bound to see a barn roof or two painted with the slogan “See Rock City.” This is an iconic marketing scheme created by Garnet and Frieda Carter to promote their attraction at Lookout Mountain, Georgia. The park opened to the public in May 1932, and in the years that followed, more than 900 storefronts in 19 states declared Rock City.

The Carter family began developing this large garden on their private property in the late 1920s. They collected more than 400 types of plants from the area and planted them along a winding path through unique rock formations on the property such as “Needle Eye,” “Balance Rock” and “Fat Man’s Squeeze.” Today visitors come from all over the world to enjoy the botanical and geological aspects of this unique attraction.

Rules for Pets Visiting Rock City Gardens Pets must be kept on a leash at all times. All pet waste must be picked up and disposed of properly. Leashed pets are allowed on the Enchanted Path and on the terrace of Café 7 Strollers (for children and pets) are not allowed in the park due to narrow passages and steep stairs

The total distance covered by this trail is only 3/4 mile, but with so much to see, it will take two to four hours to see it.

The highlight of the park is the view from Lover’s Leap, where it is said you can see seven states on a clear day. This is where you’ll also find Café 7, with pet-friendly patio seating, and the 7 States Court of Flags, where each state’s flag flies.

Adventurers can cross the Swing-A-Long Bridge on their way out, a 180-foot-long suspension bridge that spans a clear blue sky. (Or climb the mighty Stone Bridge if heights make you queasy.) And if you work up an appetite, the Great Rock Grill at the entrance has pet-friendly outdoor dining with casual dining.

Located at 1,700 feet on Lookout Mountain, Rock City is the perfect place for you and your pets to spend the day enjoying the combined beauty created by an aspiring gardener and Mother Nature. This is a place you will never forget!
