Driving the Park Loop Road is the best way to get your bearings when you arrive in Acadia. Even though it’s only 27 miles, you’re looking to spend two to three hours with stops to take in the scenery and maybe a short walk to take in the scenery.

When you’re ready for a break from the crowds, drive to Bass Harbor. Stop at Bass Harbor Head Light Station, then grab a bite to eat at Seafood Ketch on Shore Road. The decor is friendly, the seafood is right off the harbor and the views can’t be beat!
Most of Acadia National Park is located on Mount Desert Island near the town of Bar Harbor, Maine. For a more peaceful experience, visit 5% Park on the Schoodic Peninsula near Winter Harbor – just 5 miles east of Mount Desert Island.

This peninsula is different from Mount Desert Island in many ways – but it is generally less crowded. You can also drive the Schoodic Loop Road, which is open year-round and runs about 10.5 miles one way from the campground. Or drive from Spring to Schoodic Point and then to Birch Station, connecting your car for 10 miles. Along the way, you will find several scenic and coastal stops.
From the Schoodic Loop Road you can find the way to the Schoodic Trail System, which varies from easy to difficult. Cyclists have more than 8 miles of trails, and pets are welcome.
Located near Bar Harbor, Acadia is a pristine beach town. This means that many local restaurants and some shops close for the winter.
High season in Bar Harbor is between Memorial Day and Labor Day. If access to all restaurants and shops is important to you, you should plan your trip around that time. Summer temperatures are refreshing and often in the 70s during the day.
