Vacation Dog Bumper – What a day! The Taste of Reston in Reston, VA was a blast! We got to hang out with Tommy McFly (Twitter: @tomymcfly) and MIX 107.3. In the afternoon, Tommy held a hula hooping competition. Now, these contests usually last 30 seconds to a minute (4 kids enter, last one in the circle wins), but, there’s a brother combo that runs! It took these guys more than 5 minutes before one of them fell! Champions never fail but must stop. Tommy later admitted to me that it was the longest contest he had ever seen at the station—the longest contest of my life.
I had no idea Reston had so many different types of food and restaurants! For lunch, I had 2 types of sliders (one with mozzarella, tomato and other toppings I don’t know), sweet potato fries and for dinner I had 2 types of sushi (shrimp tempura and spicy tuna). This is only the tip of the iceberg – pizza, sausage, gelato, ice cream, meatballs, rolls, seafood, wine, beer… there’s so much to choose from. The hardest thing about showing a truckster at one of these shows is not being attracted to the various scents wafting through the air! It’s so hard to tell someone about Truckster and then have a fresh pizza or burger – how hard they cook in our neighborhood!

This poor guy’s butt is tied like a dinky, but don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere. The owner thought it was good, but if he knew what he stood for, I’m not sure he would approve. I hope he at least gets some rest when he gets home!

Tomorrow we are going to a car show for Father’s Day. Even though my dad isn’t in the car, it would be great if he could come down and see the Truckster – he’s retired so I know he has plenty of time.

A big dog can cause big problems when it comes to the holidays – and I speak from experience.
Over the past ten years, my family has taken dozens of walks with Shalom, our 75-pound German shepherd/mutt. Over the years we’ve experimented with different seating arrangements – and packaging – to keep humans and animals safe and comfortable. Some solutions:
The tight roof box I had ten years ago worked fine in a station wagon, but when I switched to an SUV it stopped the hatch from opening high enough for Shalom to jump into the back of my car.
Fortunately, there are cargo boxes designed to work with today’s hatchbacks—check the Yakima and Thule websites.

An enclosed 13-cubic-foot polypropylene cargo box sits on a tray attached to a steel arm that slides into a receiver to tow a trailer.
When a few pins are released, the box moves away from the vehicle, allowing full access to the cargo area.
After struggling to fit a large dog in my SUV and a small dog into the ramp at the same time, I discovered the TwisteP, a 22-by-19-inch rubber-covered step mounted on a small arm that’s perfect for trailer trailers.
If your dog doesn’t need it, you can roll it in the car so it goes under the rear bumper. When your dog needs it, the quick release pin allows it to slide out of your car, where it clicks into a step behind your vehicle.

Pets must be restrained in the car to protect them from driver interference or being thrown into an accident.
“Accident prevention and escape prevention are very different,” says Lindsay Volkow, founder of the Pet Safety Center, a nonprofit watchdog that runs independent trials of (random) prevention products.
“You can go to your local big-box retailer and get a crash prevention device for less than $20, but it’s not going to protect you, your family or your pets if you’re in an accident.”
Straps: The intermediate cage of the Gunner Kennel G1 is wrapped with standard power anchor straps. It appears in commercials in pickup truck beds, but the center advises owners to keep crates secure in the cab — and not keep dogs on the top of the car or in a trailer behind the car.

Soft-sided carriers: The SleepyPod mobile pet bed with PPRS handlock and the PetEgo FormaFrame jet set carrier with Isofix-latch connection pass the test when the seat belt is worn. It can also be secured in the SUV’s cargo area, Volkow said.
“If you have a soft side carrier that hasn’t been crash tested, install it on the floor behind the driver’s seat,” he said.
Details: SleepyPod mobile pet bed, priced around $190. (If you’re considering a harness, Kendra recommends the SleepyPod Clickit Utility and SleepyPod Clickyt Sport.) The Petego FormaFrame Jet Set Carrier costs about $250.
Within any restrictions: Pets may need to use a crate or harness to ensure they remain calm and do not disturb the driver.

Downside: If you leave the bowl in the car on a warm day, the water may be too hot to drink.
If your dog is anxious or scared in the car, or if your dog is sick, see the vet, says Liz Stello, a veterinary behavior specialist at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.
Dogs can show they are worried by panting, running, growling or crying. They may need medication or behavior modification before getting into the car. Motion sickness can also be treated.
Stello warns pet owners that dogs may stop to relieve themselves more often than their owners. (Be sure to keep them on a leash so they don’t get confused by the unfamiliar environment and get out.)
