I’ve been traveling a lot in Los Angeles lately with my boyfriend and his Mini Goldendoodle. From Rancho Palo Verdes to Santa Monica, we’ve covered a lot of places. This list contains my favorites. Puppy loves them as much as we do and we can recommend them all personally.
As I do, I’ll be adding more walks to this blog post, so it’s easy to bookmark on Pinterest or pin it for easy reference. As much as we enjoy hitting the trails of SoCal, I know I’ll be heading to another trail soon.
As with all mountains in Southern California, be sure to bring plenty of water for you and your dog, a blanket or towel for the car in case Fido gets dirty or muddy, a leash (sounds obvious, but I’ve seen it). And bags to clean up after trail dirt.
If the day is hot, start your trip early in the morning or in the afternoon. This is especially true if you are walking on a trail with little or no shade. This will help keep your dog as cool as possible while you are outside.

First on my list of the best dog hikes in Los Angeles is the Portuguese Bend Preserve in Rancho Palos Verdes. Four-legged friends are allowed out there, and it’s a popular place to hike and enjoy views of the Pacific Ocean.
Located southeast of Del Cerro Park, the Portuguese Bend Preserve is a 399-acre preserve on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Established in 2005, the site is the largest single preserve within the 1,400-acre Palos Verdes Nature Preserve. The city is famous for its steep mountains, stunning valleys and rocky cliffs.
The extensive network of Portuguese Bend Reserve is open to hikers, cyclists, horse riders and dog walkers. It’s a great place to get out and explore Southern California.

There are many trails to choose from and they vary in length and difficulty. Remember that wherever you climb, you will have to climb again eventually, given the steepness carved into the descent.
My boyfriend, his dog, and I like to hike the Burma Highway. This is the main route from the Crenshaw Blvd entrance. From here, you have great views of the ocean and Catalina Island.
The journey takes 2 hours in total. It’s a great way to get out and enjoy some of the best places in the area at the same time. Although the hills are very difficult, nothing is too steep for us. Overall, we really enjoy it.

Next on my list of the best places to hike dogs in Los Angeles is San Vicente Mountain Park. The track on the course includes everything from the famous Mulholland Drive to the former Nike Rocket Field. Located in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, it’s a fun getaway.
San Vicente Mountain Park is located east of the Santa Monica Mountains west of Highway 405 and above the Encino Reservoir. Covering 10.2 hectares, it is full of history and a place to explore on foot.
This round trip starts on Mulholland Drive and is approximately 2 miles each way. It has a wide, gently sloping dirt road that leads from the asphalt part of the road to the military reserve. An easy hike, with even terrain, great views, and a slight elevation gain.
The trip takes about an hour. If you and your dog are in good shape, you can do it quickly. If you want to spend time checking out the rocket station (it’s worth it), you might want to consider that as well.

There are plenty of other dog-friendly trails from the Rocket area, so if you fancy a longer hike, you can do that. From the Canyonback Trail to the West Mandeville Fire Road and Mulholland Drive itself, there are plenty to choose from.

Next on my list of dog hikes in Los Angeles is the trail up Mount Hollywood. If you and your canine companion want to get outside in Griffith Park, this challenging off-leash walk is a great option.
Located east of the Santa Monica Mountains, Griffith Park includes 4,210 acres of natural and landscaped land. It is one of the largest urban wilderness parks in the United States and a popular walking destination in Los Angeles.

That’s because its extensive network of walkways offers sweeping views of everything from Downtown Los Angeles to Century City, the Griffith Observatory, the Hollywood Sign and other Los Angeles landmarks.
My boyfriend, his dog and I hiked here at Mount Hollywood. After parking in the Merry Go Round Lot, we took the Fern Canyon Trail to the Upper Beacon Trail, then turned right and continued onto the scenic Vista Del Valle Drive. From there we took the Hogback trail to Dante View.
The trip took about 2.5 hours in total. We left at 9:30 a.m. It was a hot morning and we wished we had left sooner. That was our only regret because the trail was beautiful and the views were worth the climb.

Five Dog Friendly Hikes Near Tucson
Next on the list of places to hike in Los Angeles is the West Mandeville Fire Trail in Mandeville Canyon. If you like open and beautiful trails, this moderately challenging zip line hike near Brentwood and Santa Monica is great.
Located on the eastern edge of Topanga State Park, the 3.64-mile former fire road offers great opportunities to enjoy canyon views with your dog. At the top, it connects to Mulholland Drive and San Vicente Mountain Park.
Like many others on my list, this song gets a lot of sun. If it’s hot outside, it’s worth arriving earlier or later in the day.
My boyfriend and his dog and I hiked Mandeville Canyon Road. After parking on Westridge Road, we took the fire road up the hill. There were steep roads and stairs to negotiate and we enjoyed exploring the area and making our own way.

Since this hike is a hike, it can take as long as you like. The route has an elevation gain of 696 meters, so you can take that into account when deciding how far you want to go and how long it might take.

Next on my list of dog friendly hikes in Los Angeles is the Palos Verdes Peninsula Beach Hike. The Bluff Cove Trail is a short rope walk in Malaga Cove. It takes you and your dog across the bluffs from Flat Rock Beach to the beach below Surfview Park.
This relatively easy 1.1-mile out-and-back is located directly on the Pacific Ocean in South Bay. Along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning coastal views and an abundance of wildflowers before reaching a rocky beach.
