Best Dog Friendly Day Trips – There’s no better distraction than planning a pet-friendly trip! This year, my husband and I took our two Australian shepherds—Leo and Oakley—on a tour of the Great Circle National Parks, with a side trip to admire the fall foliage in Telluride. From San Diego, we spent 12 days visiting the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Monument Valley, Telluride and Mountain Village, Mesa Verde, Arches National Park, Bryce Canyon and finally Valley of Fire State Park.
Although I have to admit, it was ambitious for our first real trip. And again, it was our first time traveling with our pups! But we have collected an amazing number of memories and I hope our experience inspires you too. Here are some tips we found while preparing for our pet friendly trip!

The first decision we made was how long we should travel. For us, going in less than 14 days sounded good. We’ve realized before that as much fun as the trip is, we’re ready to go home in two weeks.

Being on the road requires more energy, planning and effort than normal days at home. And since this was our first long walk with the dogs, I wanted to avoid feeling tired at the end.
The second factor in making our plan was our desire to spend at least five days in Telluride. The whole point of our trip was to enjoy the leaves as much as possible. After all, the whole point of this trip was to feast our eyes on the golden aspen leaf!
We spent four days and five nights in Telluride and the mountain village. This time, we took a day trip to Durango, Colorado and Mesa Verde National Park. If I were to plan again, I would add a night in Cortez, Colorado to explore Mesa Verde in depth.
We also knew we didn’t want to drive too much in one day. Not only because I prefer road trips to be more road trips, but also because we needed an account of Leo and Oakley. As you sit in the car you get tired of people, it’s bad for dogs. The trip from San Diego to Telluride takes approximately 14-15 hours non-stop. The most useful app I’ve used is Roadtrippers.

By entering the start and location of your road trip, Roadtripper suggests a route and shows points of interest within 30 miles of your destination. Since the Grand Canyon is one of the dog-friendly national parks, I clicked “Add to Trip” and the Grand Canyon was quickly added as a stop. With the addition of our new station, Roadtripper prepared the proposed route and began formulating a plan.
Little by little, I added Horseshoe Bend and Monument Valley as additional places to see along the way. I wanted to add Antelope Canyon and Havasu Falls, but realized that these are two places where dogs are not allowed. We also want to be in Telluride for more than three days to catch the foliage at its peak. Limiting six hours a day of driving, I quickly marked Kingman, Arizona as my stop for the night.
For a 12-day trip with two dogs, we rented a large SUV to make the trip as easy as possible. While the Nissan Armada we chose didn’t have the best MPG, it was perfect for us and the dogs.

I plan to run as much as possible on the first day because everyone has a lot of energy in the beginning! It might be something you want to consider on your road trip.
Of course, everyone needs a bathroom break. However, given the congestion, finding the toilets was more difficult than expected! We quickly learned to use the bathroom whenever it was available whether we wanted to or not! It’s a tip we’ll keep in mind when planning our next pet-friendly trip.
