As much as I thrive in the hustle and bustle of the city, I also like to escape into the woods for a nice long walk to clear my mind. Fortunately, most forest preserves and trails around Chicago are dog-friendly. Over the years, we’ve found some of the best dog-friendly walks in the Chicago area.

Top 5 Dog-friendly Restaurants In Chicago

A popular day trip in Chicago, so if you can go mid-week, I highly recommend avoiding the weekend.

Starved Rock is a great destination in any season! Winter brings ice falls and bald eagles on the river. Spring boats float waterfalls and blooming forests. Autumn offers a beautiful display of autumn colors on the trees.

There are several routes to choose from, most of which are ’round trips’ from the lodge, so you can turn around whenever you feel like it. The Sandstone Point & Overlook Trail takes you into several valleys via a series of tracks, paths and stairs. There are usually plenty of places for your pup to wade into creeks and pools.

In the northern suburbs, Deer Grove Forest Preserve is one of Chicago’s favorite dog walking spots. Once you reach the woods, you’ll never believe how close you are to the nearby commercial areas!

Conveniently located along Dundee Road in Palatine, this trail is easily accessible from several parking lots and has well-marked, connecting trails.

If you’re looking for a longer hike in the Chicago area, visit Waterfall Glen in the southwest suburb of Darien. At 9.5 kilometers, it has the longest trail I know of in the area, and many people come here for hiking training. Along the broken gravel path you pass several streams and of course a couple of waterfalls.

You may be wondering why a dog park is on my list of dog-friendly walks, but Lakewood Dog Park in northwest suburban Wauconda is an excellent place for long, off-leash walks!

As soon as you leave the large fields, where most dogs and people hang out, you hit the paths in the forest. The park is 66 acres, so there is plenty of room to explore!

For a dog-friendly “walk” in Chicago, the Lakefront Trail is your best bet. There are 18 miles of trails to walk, run, bike or skate along the shores of Lake Michigan. I like the stretch of Oak Street Beach (shown below) south to the museum campus, which offers panoramic views of the city skyline.

There are parks and cafes along the way, so you can make this city tour an all-day event. Just steps from the railroad, Navy Pier, Lincoln Park and Grant Park all offer unique views of Chicago.

Boston is a destination that truly has it all. Kweli and I lived in the city for a few years, exploring every corner together, easily moving from the busy city center to the pine trees, large parks and charming colonial neighborhoods. The area is beautiful in all seasons, but summer and fall are the times when this area shines for dog lovers, as Bostonians know how to appreciate the sun.

The trail begins at Boston Common, which includes a dog park for socializing. Grab your camera and visit the city’s biggest attractions. Classics like thesda Terrace, Grand Central Station, the New York Public Library, and DUMBO (Brooklyn’s pet-friendly neighborhood) are just a few of the dog-friendly places you and your pooch can pick up and explore. If your dog wants to spend some time on a leash, New York offers a large number of dog parks.

No trip to New York City would be complete without visiting the shops. Fortunately, your dog can join you on the ultimate shopping trip! You can visit Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, RGdorf’s and Barneys, which are known to allow well-behaved dogs, although you’ll need to call ahead to confirm. If your dog is small and you want to pet him, visit Macy’s in Herald Square and take a ride together on the original wooden escalator. Most boutique stores also welcome dogs, and some Nordstrom locations even have doggie cookies on hand for very good dog shoppers.

New York City is a treat for foodies, including dogs! However, the city is very strict about dogs being allowed in restaurants, with the exception of Boris and Horton – the city’s first dog-friendly cafe certified by the Ministry of Health! But don’t be afraid; There are plenty of outdoor patio options around town for foodies, and many taprooms and breweries allow pets.
