Steeped in history and the site of Abraham Lincoln’s childhood home, Lincoln State Park features more than 10 miles of hiking trails, rolling hills, and two lakes. Dogs can explore this state park with you. You can see the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, a pioneer farm, the site of Lincoln’s cabin, the grave of Abraham Lincoln’s mother, and the historic Twelve Stone Road. Want to stay all day? You can camp in this state park! Ideal for an overnight stay.
If the covered bridge reminds you of a famous movie, you know why this Iowa county is a unique place to travel. Your dog can join you on the many covered bridges in this area of Iowa. Madison County is the covered bridge capital of Iowa. This county has the largest group of covered bridges in one area! Since there are many bridges accessed by dirt roads, park your RV back at the campground while you explore.
In over six years of traveling with RV pets, the one place that surprised me the most when I thought about it was the paws at the bottom of a chalk pyramid in Kansas. Many tourists do not know this place, but now the secret is out! On the western edge of Gove County in Kansas is Monument Rocks. It is a series of large chalk monoliths called chalk pyramids. Dogs are allowed on leashes and you’ll feel like you’re on another planet. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Being from Florida, we love being at the beach! But after visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Brickle and Digby, I can now understand lake life. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore features miles of sandy beaches and bluffs above Lake Michigan. As with many areas, there are some beaches where dogs are not allowed, so check with the friendly park staff, get a map, or search online. We discovered that Brickle and Digby have more than we bargained for in this picturesque lakeside setting. But remember that dogs are not allowed on the sand for safety reasons.
Your dog will feel like Paul Bunyan on a trip to Bemidji, Minnesota. This was a really fun stop for us on our trip. For a great photo opportunity, check out the giant statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe The Blue Ox. This roadside facility has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1988. Built in 1937, Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox Babe is located near the Tourist Information Center on the shores of Lake Bemidji. After taking the best photo of your dog, visit the dog-friendly Itasca State Park. Here you can walk, walk and walk along the upper reaches of the Mississippi River.
Named for the large sandstone cave in the park, Indian Cave State Park is bordered by the mighty Missouri River. Your dog will thank you for taking him here to camp, picnic and hike over 22 miles of trails. Indian Cave is the main geological feature of the park and features prehistoric Native American petroglyphs. To protect this beautiful site, be sure to keep your dog on a leash and clean up afterward.
We usually avoid big cities on our RV trips because our dog is old. But we found Gateway Arch National Park in Missouri to be a great balance between urban and scenic. Two iconic buildings in this 91-hectare park will take your breath away. Your dog will love walking through the green meadow and park, watching horse and carriage rides and relaxing with a picnic. Leashed dogs can explore the park and walk the Riverfront Trail.

We love off-road attractions and unique places, and the dog-friendly Border Village is a stroll around our surroundings. The original buildings of a North Dakota frontier village were brought here. Filled with unique antiques and artifacts, the exhibits are a great way to learn about North Dakota and its history. If you’re looking for the world’s largest buffalo monument, you’ve found it! Near the border village, visit this special photo spot. You just can’t resist!
This park is a wonderful haven for native plants and wildlife, and your dog can explore over 100 miles of trails in this national park with you. Is Cuyahoga Valley National Park dear to my heart? There is a winery inside the park! Yes, the winery is dog friendly! After hiking and exploring, sit with your dog under the trees at Sarah’s Vineyard. As with any park, check the national park’s pet restrictions before visiting.
Custer State Park is a wildlife preserve located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Custer State Park is famous for its bison herds, scenic hikes, historic sites, resorts and campgrounds. Due to the abundance of wildlife within our park boundaries, it has been named one of the top ten wildlife sites in the world. Just 15 miles from the town of Custer, this state park is huge and awe-inspiring.
I still remember the way Digby looked at me when we were off the coast of the Apostle Islands. The wind blows, the sun shines and all is well in our world of travel. Mix all the ingredients for the crust and leave to rise in a warm place for an hour. We open the dough and spread it on a greased, cast iron or pizza plate. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Bake the cake for 15 minutes and remove from the oven. Place the cheese and crust on top of the crust and pour the tomato sauce mixture over it. Return to the oven and cook for another 20 minutes. Cool completely before serving to your dog.
