Summer beach days may be over for you, but October is the perfect time for your dog to enjoy the beach. Cooler weather is better for dogs who can burn their paws in the hot sand or become dehydrated due to the lack of shade in the summer. Many beaches are closed to dogs during peak dog hours, and some allow dogs on leashes. We’ve rounded up the best beaches around the country to let your dog off-leash during the fall. Best Dog Friendly Beaches East Coast
Known as a party beach in the summer, it becomes quieter in the off-season and is open to dogs to run free. From 9/16-5/14, dogs are welcome off leash all day. Just keep Dewey’s dog license from the municipality. They offer 3 day, 8 day and lifetime licenses. A kiosk outside City Hall is available 24×7 and sells 3 and 8 day licenses. The beach is about a mile long and has bathing facilities for you.

Consistently cited as one of the best beaches in the Hamptons, Main Beach allows dogs off leash from October 1st through the second Friday in May. You just need to make sure your dog stays within 300 feet of the treadmill to avoid accidents and injuries. East Hampton has five or more other beaches that let your dog run free during the holiday season.
The Jersey Shore is not known for its dog-friendly beaches. Many do not allow dogs in the summer and very few allow dogs on leash in the fall. However, there are two options in winter in Asbury Park. Bradley Beach is located south of Asbury Park and allows dogs on leash 9/16-4/20. 8th Avenue Dog Beach is one of the only beaches in NJ that allows dogs in the summer except between 6pm and 8:30am. As of 10/1, they are welcome anytime on deck if chartered, and anytime uncharted on the beach. The crowds die down and you and your pup can enjoy a social outing.
St. Simons Island is part of a chain of barrier islands off the coast of Georgia. St. John’s has the most snow-friendly beaches in the south. Simons, which allows dogs on most beaches during off-peak hours in the summer. Between Labor Day and Memorial Day, there are several beaches that allow dogs on leashes and noise control all day, including East Beach and Massengale Park.Â
Dogs are welcome at the 1,136-acre Fort De Soto Park, which includes grassy and wooded trails for walking. TripAdvisor named the beach “Best Beach” in 2009. Dogs are not allowed on Tenby North Beach and Castle Beach from 1 May to 30 September. South Tenby Beach is the best place to walk your dog on the sand. There are some restrictions on the left side of the South Beach parking lot, but the rest of the beach is free for your dog to run and play.
Jackson’s Bay on the Isle of Barra is a dog-friendly beach, but note that Whitmore Bay is dog-free from 1 May to 30 September each year.
