Good Dog Friendly Walks Near Me
Finding dog-friendly trails in Australia is a frustrating process that requires consulting many government websites. A list of other dog-friendly resources for the Great Ocean Road and the Otways is at the end of this post.

When you write a follow-up article for a trip, a link is included with a short summary. Happy to walk through the mountains 🙂
This beautiful 2km dog friendly walk back to Lake Elizabeth is one of my favorite local walks and is accessed via a rocky ridge from behind the village of Forrest in the Otway Ranges, Victoria. The walk starts over a flat picnic area near the stream, leads to a forest of Mountain Ash and from there the path goes up and down and then climbs a steep hill through valleys of tree ferns and views of the stream before it reaches Loch Elizabeth.
There is an opportunity for your dog to cool off (on-leash) on the beach deck as long as the water is high enough to allow a foot path into the boat.
For the best photo opportunities, visit on a calm morning; However, the pool is a good place to relax before walking again at any time of the day. There is also a longer version of the walk where you continue around the lake, which is also dog friendly.
Our Pick Of Dog Friendly Walks & Cafes August 2021
Nearby Forrest Brewery has a dog-friendly beer garden for after-hours beers, paddle boarding and lunch. You can also camp with dogs at Lake Elizabeth Campground. Information is on the park’s casualty page.
The Fern Gully walk is a short walk from Barwon Water Reservoir, near Forrest. It can be done as a round trip, but it is not clearly marked so it is best for beginners to do it as a round trip to the ferns and back again. Visit the Fern Gully Walk See Something New trail notes for more photos and information.
Not to be confused with its Marysville namesake, Stevensons Falls in Otway Forest Park is a dog-friendly waterfall about a 16-minute drive from Forrest. The gravel road is winding, so slow down and be careful when passing cars. See the articles to follow here.
The furthest walk is from Stevensons Falls campsite (which is one of the dog friendly campsites in the Otway area). You are coming from the other side of the camp (opposite the entrance end) and the starting point of the trail is clearly marked. I have not done this long trail, however, the last part of the trail to the falls is the same trail as the short trail below.
Popular Walks For Paws Around Noosa
If you want a shorter walk, you can cross the river bridge at the Stevensons Falls campsite and drive down the road to the car park. This road is accessible by 2×4 when it is dry (there are fingers); however, it is muddy when it rains and sometimes only 4×4 is possible.
From the car park it is a short easy walk across a large grassy area before the path narrows and leads to the falls. This sign does not have a dog friendly sign; however, it is similarly at the end of a long walk from the campsite, which is proven to be dog friendly. There is some space to walk to get to the river and paddling the leased dogs.
This is a very nice stretch of water, certainly one of the best short and easy walks in the Otways. It is a great choice for many levels including children, beginners, unfit and adults who want to walk in the forest but within their limits.
Once you get back in the car, on the other side of the car park is another small redwood grove similar to the famous Redwood site in the Otways. They are not native trees, but they are still a sight to behold.
The 7 Best Dog-friendly Walks In The Lake District
Loves Creek Walk is a short and sweet 500 meter loop that is a great bush walk for beginner dogs.
It’s a great place to stop between the Great Ocean Road and Colac to stretch your legs or it can be combined with a walk on the Old Beechy Rail Trail for a longer walk. Read the short route notes for Loves Creek here.
This 1.2 km return route starts in the village of Moggs Creek, at the end of Robyns Road. Dog friendly and a great short trip option for a busy day trip or holiday. Leave about 1 hour back, less if you are healthy. Read more here. Read the full charts here.
This is a long walk (about 5km) starting from behind Moggs Creek. A similar view of the ocean shown above is almost stopped in the middle of the tour. This tour is dog friendly and starts at a nice picnic friendly spot so you can pack a picnic to eat on the way back.
Dog-friendly Walks In The Peak District
There are more tours in this section and I will add them to this post as I find them.
This is a beautiful area with many paths which are good for dogs to cross the bush. You can do the long 8.2km section below, a short loop, or combine the routes into a return route of varying lengths (if you can get someone to drop you off or drive you).
This trail is made by combining the short Iron Bark Basin Nature Trail with a section of the Iron Bark Track (it gets confusing, it has many similar names)! This is a great little hike for a beginner hiker or a quick stop on a road trip. It slides into the groove and back out again, so it’s short but it gets the blood pumping.
There is also a mountain bike trail that goes through the area, making it a great option for families or groups with different interests and abilities that can leave the same area.
Dog-friendly Walks In The Bay
The walk starts at the Addis Point Road car park, signs indicate the walking route.
The Iron Bark Basin walk is part of the 44km Surfcoast walk (which runs from Torquay town to near Aireys Inlet). The section of the Iron Bark Basin stretches between Addis Point and Bells Beach. The full section is 8.2km long, but you can do shorter sections as a quick turnaround or combine it with other sections of the Surfcoast trail for a longer day trip.
Not all crossings are marked, so be sure to bring a photo or screenshot of the route.

Here are some useful links to dog-friendly travel information (these links are constantly changing, so if they aren’t there, Google the title of the document and the name of the website):
The website visitotways.com has a good forest walk map called Walks & Waterfalls and a second page showing dog friendly walks in the Otway area. Here is the direct link to the pdf:
The Surf Coast Shire Walks and Waterfalls guide includes a number of dog-friendly walks, particularly around the town of Lorne.

10 Top Dog-friendly Bushwalks In Nsw
I love our parks, but I hate their current website (as of 2021). Their information pages for most tours are empty, and while there are park notes and trail guides in pdf format that have been updated for years, most of these documents are not in the public domain. Sometimes it can be helpful to Google the name of the place and the notes of the park.
You can also bring dogs into many state forests. These are the warehouses set aside and the areas set aside for fuel. They are a great place to take your dog. Finding information about them is a confusing maze of official DELWP websites (I didn’t include the links because they might have changed the name again by the time you read this article lol and no they are always leading when they do this). However, there is also an app now and it’s great, you can find more information here. !

Investing in a “Sling Guard” seat cover was one of the best purchases I made when traveling with my dog in the car at home and on holiday (after my 33kg dog tore through several covers on the first car ride).
