You can enjoy both mountain ranges and ocean views as you travel northeast in your RV! Big cities like New York, Boston and Philadelphia also offer a slice of history and culture. This region truly has it all, but like every region we’ve visited, Brickle and Digby had our favorite dog-friendly RV destinations in the Northeast.
Eleven states comprise the northeastern United States, including Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Northeast has a variable climate with very cold winters. But visiting this area in the summer is a great hike, and the colors of the fall leaves will inspire you to go outside with your dogs.
Food is what we love most about travel, and this range has it all, from Boston baked beans, wild blueberries, stews, chowder, bread and apples! Our dogs Brickle and Digby definitely had favorites! Maybe we’d share some blueberries in Maine!

There are over 19 acres of land along the banks of the Mystic River in Connecticut. Mystic Seaport is the largest maritime museum in the United States. But this is really a park! Walk your dog, see beautiful boats, and learn about the maritime lifestyle of this part of New England. Pets must be kept on a leash and are welcome in all outdoor areas. You may have heard of the famous Bar Harbor, Maine. But have you heard of Bass Harbor? Even years after our visit, we can’t stop talking about this destination. Bass Harbor, Maine, is on the “backside” of a desert island that is home to much of Acadia National Park. It is located in the southwest part of the island. Our favorite dog-friendly hike was directly from Bass Harbor Campground to Bass Harbor Lighthouse! It is located here in Parkland, not far southeast of the port. This is one of the most photographed and famous lights in the United States. We can still remember the sounds of water, buoys and birds. We felt very comfortable. After a day of blueberry picking and pie eating, this hike was perfect. Don’t forget there are over 100 miles of trails open to dogs in Acadia National Park!
Cape Cod in Massachusetts is truly an experience. Cape Cod is a hook-shaped peninsula in the US state of Massachusetts. It’s a popular summer destination, but visiting off-season is a great way to avoid the traffic. Beautiful villages, lighthouses, ponds and bays, and beaches are a playground for you and your dog. We also enjoyed visiting the larger town of Hyannis and seeing the boats. We decided to take a dog-friendly boat to Martha’s Vineyard for ice cream too! Not all dogs have sea legs, so be prepared! When camping on Cape Cod in your RV, you’ll have a great starting point for many Massachusetts destinations. You can choose between the most expensive resorts.

There is only one way to get to this island in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay and that is by boat. Smith Island is located 12 miles off the coast of Crisfield, Maryland. Head to the Crisfield City Dock and board one of the passenger ferries that operate here. Your dog will love the wind in his hair on this 45 minute ride! However, Brickle is not particularly excited about this trip. Every dog is different. Tell your dog that this island was first charted by Captain John Smith in 1608! Fewer than 200 residents live here year-round, many of whom speak the native dialect. Take your time and walk the streets of the island and experience the simple way of life. Don’t forget to try Maryland’s official state cake, the Smith Island Cake. You can’t say that many people or dogs were here. This is truly an adventure you will never forget.
