It may surprise you, but we found an absolutely beautiful beach gem on the south coast. Have you been to Camber Sands before? I certainly didn’t, but this was one of the results after googling ‘sandy beaches near me’. With so much negative news lately about people visiting beaches irresponsibly during the coronavirus pandemic, we decided to go one last beach with pictures of packed beaches in Bournemouth, Brighton and other popular destinations. We also had a quick look at TripAdvisor and most of the reviews were very positive. A bag full of towels, doggie bags, antibacterial gel, baby wipes and face masks (probably) we were on our way! After about an hour and a half of driving, we were looking for a parking lot near the beach. When we pulled into the parking lot and saw the big sign that said “No dogs on this beach, ask the attendant,” we discovered that not all beaches are dog friendly. Fortunately, there was an officer at the kiosk in the parking lot who informed us that we only had to drive to the end of the road and that there was a parking lot next to the dog beach. We drove to this parking lot for about a minute and parked easily.
Honestly, what a wonderful sight awaited us! I took my shoes off the car as the short uphill to the beach was a path of beautiful undulating grassy sand dunes leading us to a stunning view of the deep blue sea against a stunning blue sky.
We paddled along the beautiful beach to the sea and, being September, felt very welcome and warm. Both dogs happily splashed and paddled around until we bought a frisbee which prompted lots of play. It was wonderful to see them in the water, jumping on the waves and swimming cheerfully in the dog paddle. The dogs we took to the park on their paws last year were far from the dogs that reluctantly jumped into the dog pool even when baited with tennis balls. To be fair, when we visited the paws at the park in Ardingley, south of the England Showgrounds, last May, neither dog had much swimming experience. We hadn’t rescued Ellie in a long time and I knew Duke didn’t have much swimming experience. They were both a natural pair of water babies on this big day, but it was nice to experience and they felt more confident when we were in the water with them. Hmm yes shorts and all. Note to self – try to remember that denim shorts and the ocean are not a good combination, especially when you’ve been sitting on the sand for a bit, get it?

If we ever go pawing around the park again – assuming we have a slightly more normal life than the ‘new normal’, I think these two spaniels will be great candidates for access to the big pool!
One side note though – have you ever been to Šapa in the park? Paws in the Park is a dog-friendly event where your pooch can participate in activities such as dog fighting, fly ball, agility, search and rescue, and swimming. There are also many stalls selling products for dogs. If you are looking for a fun day out with your dog I would definitely recommend a visit. The events are held at the South of England Showground in Ardingly, West Sussex, and the Kent Showground in Detling, Kent. At Camber Sands, the dogs had a great time chasing frisbees in the ocean and on land, and they also enjoyed jumping waves and running in the water. It was really such a beautiful day. It probably helped that the sun was shining, the sky was blue and the beach wasn’t that crowded. A great dog day at any time of the year. Choosing a working day in September and choosing a school day was a very good choice. If you don’t have kids at school, I would recommend visiting the beach during class as it is very quiet. There weren’t that many people on the beach, and those who were kept social distancing. I’ve lived on the East Coast most of my life, and as someone who loves to travel, you can bet I’ve spent many years. Explore different locations along the Atlantic coast.
